Great News! On January 22, 2026, the U.S. House passed a minibus appropriations bill
funding the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) through the end of
2026. The legislation includes a two-year extension of Medicare telehealth flexibilities
for PTs and PTAs through the end of 2027.

The Department of Education’s proposed “professional degree” definition excludes physical therapy — threatening PT students with strict federal loan caps ($20,500/year; $100,000 lifetime).

APTA is pushing for PT to be recognized and working with national coalitions to protect student loan access. Action is urgent!
