Push and pull, rajas and tamas. In the above version of handstand, I’m physically pushing through the shoulders and pulling my legs towards one another. As a result, I find balance, satva. I need both energies, otherwise I’d fall (without the pushing) and remain stuck (without pulling and drawing my legs towards each other). In life, we tend towards one energy or another- neither is right or wrong, though we develop patterns favoring one. Too much rajas energy can lead to burn out, feelings of anxiety and not being present because we’re too focused on doing and being on the go. On the other hand, too much tamas can lead to lethargy, feeling unmotivated, and can contribute to feelings of depression. By finding some softness when in a rajasic state, and bringing in a little push while in a tamasic state, we can work towards a more balanced experience.

Thank you for offering these handstand drills in his Handstand and Meditation immersion🙏

Preparing for the handstand and meditation immersion with . I crave the physical challenge of handstand, yet I know what I really need is the meditation component of this immersion. As someone who tends towards more rajas energy (on the go, always moving or “doing”), it can be a real challenge to slow down and be still. I used to avoid meditation for that reason, and there was a time in the past where I would have signed up and skipped over the meditation piece. I also had a false idea that when I meditated I was supposed to stop all thoughts. Now I understand that meditation is not about stopping my thoughts but rather not joining the ride my thoughts like to take me on. I also understand why I have a hard time being still- all those limiting beliefs that begin to stir in the quiet. We all have underlying reasons for our behaviors. And while they’re not an excuse for why we do (or don’t do) certain things, once uncovered they can lead to greater awareness which in turn can lead to making different choices. So while meditation can be a challenging practice for me, this go around I’m making a conscious choice to lean into it as opposed to avoiding it.

Last night after a day of clients…
I hopped on my mat…
To clear my mind…
And settle my body

By tuning into the needs of our body, we can regulate our nervous system after a period of arousal. In addition to yoga, here are a few other suggestions to regulate the nervous system.

- Take a walk
- Spend time in nature
- Journal
- Draw your feelings
- Spend time with someone whose presence you find grounding and calming

How you treat yourself and show up for yourself is a mirror for feelings of self worth. If you find that you’re self critical and, more often than not, judging yourself, then that can indicate signs of worthlessness. If you show up for yourself in a compassionate, loving way (includes accountability and taking responsibility for your actions and choices but doing so with compassion as opposed to judgement), you’re holding a mirror that reflects feelings of worthiness. One of the healing properties of yoga is that it can give us a beautiful opportunity to cultivate self-compassion. By honoring our needs moment to moment and breath to breath, we are showing ourselves that our needs matter and we are worthy of meeting our needs. As a bonus, when a yoga teacher can reflect our needs through vocal recognition or a nonverbal cue, we can feel seen and validated which strengthens our sense of worthiness.

Trauma can impact our ability to feel into our body. Perhaps our body does not feel like a safe place or perhaps we’re unable to trust in our body’s cues. The yoga practice can be a beautiful way to begin the process of feeling, identifying, and responding in an attuned way to our body’s cues. There’s no rush, start slow and small. By gradually bringing awareness to our body’s cues, we can begin to strengthen interoception, which can lead to an increased capacity for emotional regulation.
