Our colleagues at the International Federation of Musculoskeletal Research Societies are seeking your input if you have utilized their Musculoskeletal Knowledge Portal (MSKKP; mskkp.org). If you have used the resource in the past or if you are a new user, you are invited to take this survey by July 21st, 2025 which will help shape the resource over the upcoming years. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1DAGqUJ6O6Ee4iYGFe36mTqJ-zvpXJVreZu8FGakJNJg/viewform?edit_requested=true

The Musculoskeletal Knowledge Portal (MSKKP) is an in-development resource for genomics and other omics of the musculoskeletal system that will serve as the central hub for the research community. As we develop the MSKKP, we need your input to ensure that it meets the needs of diverse investigators....

Have you "Asked an Expert?"

One of our most valued member benefits is "ask an expert" where members can pose questions in 14 categories related to musculoskeletal health assessment and have them answered by our expert volunteers.

This extensive archive of questions and answers is an excellent resource to utilize if you haven't already! https://iscd.org/aaerules/

The World Health Organization (WHO) is undertaking a worldwide consultation to assess whether the 1994 WHO definition of osteoporosisโ€”both its wording and its DXA-based operational criteriaโ€”continues to meet present-day scientific and public-health needs. Advances in knowledge, technology and equity demand a fresh, collective review.

We therefore seek the informed views of clinicians, researchers, policymakers, program managers, industry partners, patient and caregiver advocates, and other professionals engaged in bone health.

1. The scientific validity and clinical utility of the current definition across diverse populations and settings;
2. Equity implications, including s*x- and ethnicity-specific reference data;
3. Availability and accessibility of diagnostic tools (e.g. DXA) in low- and middle-income contexts; and
4. Opportunities to strengthen guidance for early diagnosis, risk stratification and fracture prevention.

You are invited to complete the online survey (link below), which consists of five sectionsโ€”about 36 questions in totalโ€”and takes roughly 20โ€“25 minutes. You may save your progress and return at any time before submitting.

Please submit your response by 15 June 2025.

The ISCD Canadian panel held the Quality Bone Densitometry (QBD) Courses for Physicians and for Technologists on 5-6 April 2025 in Montreal, Quebec, in conjunction with the Canadian Association of Radiologists (CAR) Annual Scientific Meeting. The event was supported by an ISCD Regional Panel grant.

The technologist course was 2 days and the physician course was 1 day with 56 total attendees. This was the first in-person ISCD course given by the Canadian panel since before the Covid pandemic, and all speakers were members of the Canadian panel. The feedback received from participants was overwhelmingly positive.

Extensive in-kind support in organizing the course was provided by CAR, as well as the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT). Industry support was obtained from Aymes Medical and Hologic Canada. Endorsement was obtained from Osteoporosis Canada and the Canadian Association of Nuclear Medicine.

Our Latin America Regional Panel held a ISCD DXA Body Composition Analysis Course virtually on March 13, 2025. It was a landmark event in collaboration with the Argentine Association of Osteology and Mineral Metabolism (AAOMM) and the Argentine Society of Osteoporosis (SAO). The course attracted over 100 participants, including endocrinologists, osteologists, rheumatologists, radiologists, and DXA technicians from Argentina and several Latin American countries.

Led by ISCD Latin American Panel members, the course addressed clinical and technical aspects of DXA-based body composition analysis and emphasized best practices in body composition assessment.

Participant feedback reflected high satisfaction and a strong interest in more ISCD-led educational offerings. This event highlights ISCDโ€™s growing presence in the region and reinforces the Societyโ€™s mission to promote excellence in musculoskeletal health assessment worldwide.

We are continuing to highlight personal stories from our members, celebrating the guidance and support theyโ€™ve received from ISCD mentors throughout their journey in the bone health field. ISCD mentors inspire and ensure the next generation grows and thrives in our community. Understanding the importance and impact of these stories, we want to bring them to life.

In 1989, my nuclear medicine career was at a crossroads. I was not happy at my place of employment and was seriously thinking of changing careers completely. My neighbor was starting his own general contracting company and wanted to hire me as a carpenter, having helped him build decks, gazebos, and even shingle a few roofs as a part-time weekend gig. (I have always been handy with power tools and mechanically inclined). But as he was just starting out, he could only offer me part-time work and I needed something to fill in the other two days a week. Preferably a job that also offered health insurance benefits as I was also starting a family, just married, and had a thirty-year mortgage to service.

I saw an ad in the paper (yes, they had real newspaper want ads back then), for a part-time nuclear medicine technologist to do dual- and single photon absorptiometry scanning for a rheumatology practice. It also required the ability to maintain a Nuclear Regulatory Commission radioactive materials license, both of which I had done before. It was then that I met Dr. Susan Broy, a rheumatologist who was really into osteoporosis testing and treatment, even though at the time, there were only two approved drugs and one used off-label. She hired me within five minutes of the start of the interview. The job was 20 hours a week (two ten-hour days a week) and a perfect fit with my budding carpentry career.
