✅TRUE OR ❌FALSE
My toddler should be pronouncing all his words perfectly and correctly all the time...

❌FALSE! Here is why:

👶🏼 Toddlers are still developing their sound system!

🚧 Between the ages of ~2-3, there is big construction going on in your toddler's speech system development. They are learning new sounds and how to put them together every day.

If your toddler is saying “DAH” for “DOG” or “BA” for “BALL” or maybe “AIPANE” for “AIRPLANE”, you can help them move from saying PART OF THE WORD ➡️ THE WHOLE WORD by using these strategies:

1️⃣ Get EYE TO EYE 👁 This is important because you want them to watch your mouth while you say the word “DOG”.
2️⃣ Make SILLY SOUNDS – when playing say sounds such as “b-b-b” when going over a bump with a toy truck or “p-p-p” when popping bubbles. Then, try to get your toddler to imitate these sounds back to you.
3️⃣ REPEAT what your toddler says – if your toddler says a word incorrectly, repeat it back to him correctly in a playful way. For example, if he or she says, “dah” for dog you can say, “That’s right! It is a dog!” while putting a slight exaggeration on “dog”
4️⃣ PRAISE your toddler! 🙏🏼 Clap and celebrate with your toddler, even when he is not saying the whole word. He will want to continue to communicate with you because you’re applauding him for his efforts!

Great ideas for early imitation skills!

🎬 Actions before sounds, sounds before words.

Children learn how to say words through imitation! Imitating actions is an important first step on the path toward those first spoken words!

Make it fun and keep it simple. Keep your child's play skills in mind and make sure you are asking them to imitate actions in play that are at their current ability level!

The examples above are all simple actions you can try with any child in the exploratory phase of play (six months and up).

An example of asking a child to imitate a skill that isn't in their play repertoire yet would be asking a child in the exploratory phase of play to drive a car on the floor or put a peg in a board (which are examples of functional and relational play skills). As a parent, it is in our nature to anticipate our child’s wants and needs. But if we continue to give our toddlers what they need without having to ask for it, then they have no reason to communicate in those moments.
