Catherine Jean Woodruff
October 6, 1932 ~ August 6, 2025 (age 92)

We are so sad to announce the death of Catherine Jean (Bensen) Woodruff.

Jean’s amazing family was at her side to love and support her as she moved on.

Jean had a lifelong connection to Middletown, NY. Born on October 6, 1932, she was the daughter of Frederick Henry Bensen and Helen (Dwyer) Bensen. She grew up in the house her father built at 12 Benedict Street.

Jean was educated at The Academy Avenue School, Middletown High School and was an incredibly proud member of the Keuka College class of 1954 where she earned her Registered Nurse pin. She recently celebrated her 70th College reunion with her classmates Lynn, Ann and Marilyn, it was quite a thing. She was the first in her family to attend college.

Jean was married to Charles Richard Woodruff for fifty-nine years. Charles predeceased her in 2014. Together they created and nurtured a strong, caring family. Their homes in Howells, then Wolf Lake, were full and active.

Jean is survived by her four sons, Charles F (Arlene), Mark R (Joyce), Christopher J (Joann) and Paul Bensen (Ellen) Woodruff. She is also survived by ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She is further survived by her cousins Jane Wagner and Michael Wagner. Jean was predeceased by her sister, Mary Anne Bensen and her lifelong companion and best friend Thomas Stenson. Sharp to her last day she knew everyone’s birthday, anniversary and special event. She loved her family and never missed a card, gift or greeting on those days.

While raising her family Jean also cared for others as a Registered Nurse at Horton Memorial Hospital. She finished her long career there as the director of the In-Service Department.

She was an avid Bridge and Mahjong player and enjoyed spending time with her playing partners at home and in Florida. Betty, her Florida partner in crime was precious to her. Jean was a member of the Middletown Gardens Club and The Red Hat Society.

Our family would like to thank Dr. Jeffrey Stewart for his consistent wisdom and care, Dr. John Ferguson, her doctor and more importantly, a friend, the staff at The Pines, the caring team at The Braemar Assisted Living Center where her residence was much too short and the 3rd Floor team at Garnet Medical for doing all the little things that made mom comfortable.

Friends and family may visit at Cornelius, Dodd & Connell Funeral Home, 26 Grove St., Middletown, NY on Tuesday, August 12th from 3PM-7PM.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, August 13th at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 8 High Street, Bloomingburg, NY.

Ruth V. Rivers
December 16, 1928 ~ July 9, 2025 (age 96)

Ruth Virgina (Callahan) Rivers, age 96, beloved mother, grandmother, “GG” (great-grandmother) and aunt, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2025 at her home in Middletown, New York after a long courageous battle with Alzheimer’s.

Throughout her life, Ruth was known for her kindness, generosity and strength. She had a remarkable affinity for people and truly knew no strangers; connecting effortlessly with everyone she met. Ruth was an avid book reader with romance novels being her main genre. She also LOVED good music (with her favorite artist being Whitney Houston), shopping, collecting Coach bags and American Eagle coins.

Over the years, Ruth’s spiritual strength was grounded as a member of First Baptist Church (Far Rockaway and Middletown), Hollywood Baptist Church (Amityville) and Otisville Mt. Hope Presbyterian Church (Otisville).

She leaves to cherish her memory: daughters Cheryl (James Sr.) Rivers-Jones and LaVella Simpson (“Cookie”); sons: Bernard (Diane) Rivers and Brian Weir; grandchildren: James Jones Jr., Jerome Manigault, Joseph (Caitlin) Rivers, Joshua Simpson, Ryan Guenste, Molly Jane Garcia and Tommy Garcia; great-grandchildren: Jacari Prince Jones, Jace Bernard Rivers and Aurora Ruth Rivers; and nephew and nieces: Worthy McCargo Jr (“Skipper”), Theresa Callahan-Hunter, Sandra Lambert-Watkins and Tracey (Kevin) Franklin.

She will also be remembered by special friends and extended family members: Christine DeFreese, Eloise Hickman, Evangelyn Ramsey, Mamie Fleetwood, Jackie Rivers, Charlene Walker and Tracy Crouse.

Ruth was preceded in death by her siblings: James Monroe Callahan, Jr., Sarah Matthews, Jeanette Pearl (Worthy) McCargo, Arthur (Joyce) Callahan and Sidney (Faye) Callahan; grandsons: Jordan Jones and Andrew Guenste (“Drew”); niece and nephew: Lynet Valero and Arthur James Callahan; former spouse: Nathaniel Rivers; co-worker and friend: Barbara VanCura; and beloved pets: Kenny, Cassius and Frenchie.

Helene Lucille Shafran
March 19, 1934 ~ July 5, 2025 (age 91)

Helene Lucille Shafran, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to many, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 5. Born in the Bronx to Samuel and Yetta Hast, she grew up in Willimantic, Connecticut, where her journey of love, family, and service began.

While attending the University of Connecticut, Helene met Rubin, who would become her devoted husband of 59 years. Together, they built a rich life that took them from Connecticut to Massachusetts, Hawaii, Forest Hills, Canarsie, Middletown, Boca Raton, and finally Highland Mills, creating cherished memories in each place they called home. Helene lived her final days in Chester surrounded by her family.

Helene was the proud mother of three sons: Peter (Paula), Jonathan (Karen), and Howard. Her greatest joy, however, came from her eight grandchildren — Jared (Kelly), Ethan (Michelle), Michael, Kayla (Daniel), James, Max, Andy, and Sophie — whose achievements and interests she followed with unwavering enthusiasm and pride.

A woman of many talents, Helene pursued her passion for music early in life, singing in a band in Norwich, Connecticut. She later channeled her energy into a successful career in real estate.

Deeply committed to her faith and community, Helene was a life member of both Hadassah and Sisterhood, actively participating at Temple Sinai in Middletown and B'nai Torah Congregation in Boca Raton. Her dedication to Israel and Jewish causes remained a cornerstone of her life.

Helene will be remembered for her generous spirit, her devotion to those she loved and her remarkable ability to maintain connections with a vast network of friends and family around the world. Her legacy lives on through the many lives she touched and the strong family foundation she built.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hadassah or any Jewish organization of your choice.

Jean Ann Dolan
January 18, 1947 ~ June 14, 2025 (age 78)

Jean Ann Dolan, a lifelong area resident, entered into rest on Saturday, June 14, 2025 with her loving husband by her side. She was 78 years of age.

The daughter of the late Charles Henry and Marjorie Mae Theis, she was born on January 18, 1947 in Goshen, NY.

Jean graduated from SUNY Orange and SUNY Oneonta with a degree in education. Jean was a proud graduate of Minisink Valley High School, Slate Hill, NY, where she taught first grade for 34 years. Through her years of teaching, Jean kept in touch with many of her former students and even taught several of their children.

Jean was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association,

The Bible Students Association, the Tri-State Car Club, Orange County Antique Auto Club and other various clubs and organizations. She enjoyed meeting new people at events and making lifelong friends from around the world.

Jean’s family was her priority. She loved spending time with them whether it was watching a movie, watching the grandchildren dance, attending school plays, concerts, recitals, going for ice cream in the rat rod, reading books, or singing. You can bet Jean was front and center cheering and encouraging them every time. Family was first and foremost in her life.

Jean also loved to travel as often as possible. Any kind of an adventure, live music, nature, fashion and a unique find at a vintage store or yard sale was welcomed. You would often hear of Jean setting sail on a cruise to the Caribbean. She would never return from a trip without bringing back some treasured items from her travels for her loved ones. One of her favorite vacationing places for many years was Assateague Island in Maryland where she could sit by the ocean and see the wild horses.

Jean would reunite with friends from across the country while there. Jean’s love of nature would often bring her to the Orange County Arboretum where she took in the sights of all the beautiful flowers, trees and bushes that are locally grown.

Like her mom, she loved the Bible and the promises contained therein (Revelations 21:4). Through the Bible and her faith, Jean made life long connections and friendships with people around the world. She was a true lover of the gift of life.

Survivors include: her loving and devoted husband Joseph Matthew Dolan; her children, Joseph Matthew Dolan and Joanna Mae Dolan; her grandchildren, Julianna Belle Browning, Brielle Magnolia Browning, Mirabelle Autumn Browning, Josiah Samuel Dolan and Kianna Jade Dolan; her brother Charles H. Theis and his wife Kelly; and niece Allison Lindsey Theis.

A memorial visitation for family and friends will be held from 4-7 PM Friday, June 27, at the Cornelius, Dodd & Connell Funeral Home, 26 Grove St., Middletown, NY. A celebration of life will be held at 2 PM Saturday, June 28th at her daughter’s home.

Jean’s most precious joy was doing all she could for her grandchildren. Any memorial contributions will be put in trusts for her grandchildren’s education and can be made directly to her family. As a lifelong educator, providing towards her grandchildren’s future was a priority that she would love to see continued.

Mark W. Horler
July 17, 1962 ~ June 15, 2025 (age 62)

Mark Horler, age 62, passed away from a massive stroke on June 15, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, humor, and a deep love for history, baseball, and his family.

Family was always at the center of Mark’s life. He was a proud and loving father to his daughter, Madeline Horler, who was the light of his life. He supported her dreams, celebrated her successes, and stood by her with quiet strength through life’s ups and downs. He was also a dedicated stepfather to Amanda (Hilyard) Gulbrandsen from a young age, with whom he shared many special moments, deep conversations, and unlimited support that stood the test of time. He was the ultimate brownie dad. Mark also leaves behind Alberto Monges, Madeline’s fiancé; Amanda’s wife, Lauren Guldbrandsen and his granddaughter, Julien Gulbrandsen.

In life Mark was an unwavering Boston Red Sox fan. He followed the team through every season—good, bad, and miraculous. He often said that loving the Red Sox taught him patience and hope, and some of his fondest memories were made at Fenway Park, whether in person or in front of the television with family and friends. Baseball, to him, was more than a game—it was a way of life, a connection to his past, and something to pass on to future generations.

Mark spent his career as a passionate social studies teacher at Twin Towers Middle School. He started teaching in 1985 and retired in 2017. Throughout his 30 plus year teaching career, he inspired countless students with his love for civics, American history, and meaningful conversation and debate. He believed in the power of understanding the past to create a better future and took great pride in the work he did in the classroom.

Born in Middletown, NY on July 17, 1962, Mark developed a love of learning early in life. He graduated from SUNY Cortland with a degree in Secondary Education - Social Studies, and soon found his true calling in the classroom. As a social studies teacher for over 33 years, he believed deeply in the importance of civic engagement, historical awareness, and critical thinking. His classroom was a place where students were encouraged to ask questions, challenge ideas, and see themselves as part of something larger than the present moment.

Students and colleagues alike remember him for his dry wit, encyclopedic memory for historical trivia, and the way he brought lessons to life—often with a well-timed joke or an impromptu story that tied the past to the present. For him, teaching was never just a job—it was a responsibility and a joy.

Though life’s paths shifted, those who knew Mark will remember his wit, his curiosity, and the care he showed to the people around him. His influence lives on in the lessons he taught, the laughter he shared, and the lives he touched.

A memorial visitation will be held, Saturday, June 21, 2025 from 1-5 pm at Cornelius, Dodd & Connell Funeral Home, 26 Grove Street, Middletown, NY. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Middletown SPCA.
