The government shutdown has impacted so many in our community. We continue to see an increase in visitors at our Healthy Pantry Centers in Newark and Milford, mobile pantries and partner food pantries, as more neighbors turn to us for help.

Last week alone, our Newark pantry served 895 households, including 230 households visiting for the first time. In Milford, 701 households received assistance, with 145 new households coming to us for help.

Typically, each location serves between 1,600 and 1,700 families over the course of a month. In just one week, each location served roughly half the number of families we would typically see in an entire month.

It appears the government will reopen soon, but it still remains unclear when SNAP recipients will receive their full November benefit allotment and federal workers receive backpay.

We will continue to do all that we can to support our neighbors during this time. Our pantries in Newark and Milford will operate with extended hours for the rest of the month.

To learn how you can help or receive help during this time, visit www.fbd.org.
