OASAS has received information regarding a concerning series of overdoses in the downtown NYC area, near Broadway and Lafayette Streets in zip code 10012. This morning, Tuesday, May 13th, five individuals experienced overdoses within a three-hour period. We understand this news is distressing, and our thoughts are with those affected and their loved ones. All five individuals required multiple naloxone doses and EMS transfer to area hospitals.

There is heightened concern that sedatives, possibly medetomidine and/or xylazine, are contributing to these overdoses. These substances can cause prolonged sedation, and their presence is suspected due to the fact that the individuals remained significantly sedated even after naloxone administration and the return of normal respiration. The potential presence of these sedatives in the illicit drug supply increases the risk of severe and potentially fatal outcomes.

Questions about this alert can be addressed to OASAS’ Addiction Medicine Service at AddictionMedicineNursing@oasas.ny.gov.

Free xylazine and fentanyl test strips and naloxone are available to be sent to all New Yorkers by visiting https://oasas.ny.gov/harm-reduction-delivered.
