The Pullman Company began hiring workers for their train cars shortly after the end of the Civil War. And many Blacks were porters for short time periods--not captured on censuses, draft cards, or other conventional tools used by genealogists. This is a book that reflects 100 years of African American community history in a very effective manner and therefore is recommended for all researchers.
