Here’s what you missed in the DSADE community ✨ A few updates from our members about recent milestones!:

🏆 Luke and his Cape Henlopen High School team were the Unified Flag Football State Champions! Along the way, he formed an unforgettable bond with his teammates who supported him from start to finish.
💇‍♀️ Natalie finally got the hair transformation she’s been waiting for: pink highlights! After a few months of discussing hair dye and the required upkeep, she made it happen!
🪩 Bobbi had her first dance recital.
🎂 Drew and Finley celebrated their birthdays—the big 12 and 4!
🍞 Emmalyn celebrated the holidays, mastered making the perfect PB&J by herself, and learned how to pump her legs on the swing.
🚗 Abby got a sweet new ride: a new push car! She loves cruising around the park with her family.
💪 Michael started playing bocce on his high school team.

🚨 DATE CHANGE! 🚨 Our basics of sign language webinar is now taking place on Wednesday, January 21, at 6:30 PM! We hope you can hop on for this session to get the hang of the basics of sign language 🧑🏽‍💻

About this Webinar:

In partnership with the Down Syndrome Association of Maryland, we're offering this virtual, beginner-friendly session for families who want to build and practice American Sign Language (ASL) vocabulary to support a loved one with Down syndrome. This presentation focuses on everyday signs for emotions and common actions, and helping caregivers strengthen communication, connection, and confidence at home and in the community.

About our Presenter:

Gwynn Gibbons brings over 30 years of experience as an itinerant teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and she is also a proud mom to two daughters (one with Down syndrome). With deep expertise and empathy, Gwynn is passionate about helping children and families build meaningful communication skills.

Sign up for our upcoming webinar on January 28 at 7:00 PM, Decision-Making Options Beyond Guardianship: What Families Need to Know 💻

We’ve heard from many families that they were told guardianship is required when a loved one with an intellectual or developmental disability turns 18. In reality, guardianship is often unnecessary—nearly 95% of the time, there are effective, less restrictive alternatives.

Join Hope Vella, BSW, MS, from Community Legal Aid Society, Inc. (CLASI), along with Valerie Snow, Esquire. for an informative webinar that breaks down decision-making options such as Supported Decision-Making Agreements, Power of Attorney, and Advance Health Care Directives. The team will explain how these tools empower individuals with ID/DD to maintain their rights while receiving the support they need.

This session will walk families through:
💙 How Supported Decision-Making works as an alternative to guardianship
💙 When Power of Attorney and Advance Health Care Directives may be appropriate
💙 How capacity is assessed using person-centered, accessible approaches
💙 The step-by-step process to complete documents at no cost through a referral from the Division of Developmental Disabilities Services (DDDS)

Families will leave with clear, accurate information and reassurance that support is available—without giving up independence unnecessarily.

Once our staff returns to the office on Monday, we're getting to work on exciting initiatives for 2026, including revamped parent and family meetups and teen/adult social programming. Let's make this OUR year!

Lastly, our final Top Three Moment of 2025: Days of Summer Camp! Days of Summer was started in 2012 with a small group of about twenty children. Today, this camp has grown into a large program that serves all three counties in Delaware! This year, about 100 campers made memories, practiced independence, and developed lasting friendships across these three busy weeks.

Our Top Three Moments are just a snapshot of a packed year of DSADE programs and events. There’s still time to be a part of the story of this year—consider making a year-end gift to support our mission of encouraging a lifetime of opportunities for people with Down syndrome. Next up in our Top Three Moments of 2025 series: The DE Down Syndrome Walk & 5K! This was an exciting year for the walk with Glasgow Park as our new venue—and it exceeded our expectations. With our team tents arranged in a circle around all of the event activities, it felt like we created our own little village for the day. We also had such a wonderful turnout on the beautiful October day, with hundreds of friends, family members, runners, volunteers, and community supporters coming out to support our mission.

Let’s make 2026 even better! Today, you can make a difference in this event by making a year-end gift. Click here to make a gift: https://secure.lglforms.com/form_engine/s/pndU8No5IAxu4tMX16euPw

Welcome to the DSADE’s Top Three Moments of 2025 series! There’s so much to be thankful for as we wrap up the year, and our 2025 Top Three Moments just covers a few things. First up in our 2025 Top Three: Our cooking program! Our Teen/Adult Cooking Classes are among our most popular events, with seats quickly filling up every month. We also held our first Youth Cooking Classes this year, thanks to the leadership of DSADE moms Sarah and Eileen.

These programs wouldn’t be possible without the support of our community, whether that’s our cooking class volunteers, our members who continue to sign up, or those who made a gift. Help us keep these programs available and accessible to our community by making a year-end gift today! Click here to make a gift: https://secure.lglforms.com/form_engine/s/pndU8No5IAxu4tMX16euPw
