Disability Network of Mid-Michigan We promote and encourage independence for all people with disabilities. Creating access and inclusion

We believe in what is known as the Independent Living Philosophy. The Independent Living philosophy postulates that people with disabilities are the best experts on their needs, and therefore they must take the initiative, individually and collectively, in designing and promoting better solutions and must organize themselves for political power. We believe that people with disabilities have the same right to participation, to the same range of options, degree of freedom, control and self-determination in every day life and life projects that other citizens take for granted. Thus, we as IL activists seek the removal of infrastructure, institutional and attitudinal barriers in our communities.

Braille is more than a reading system—it’s a pathway to independence, literacy, and full inclusion for people who are blind or have low vision.

At DNMM, we’re committed to promoting accessible communication and supporting tools that empower every member of our community to thrive. Let’s celebrate the power of Braille and the importance of accessibility for all.

From all of us at Disability Network Mid-Michigan, have a safe and happy New Year!

A new University of Michigan poll found that while only 19% of adults over 50 identify as having a disability, as many as half may actually meet the legal definition under the ADA because of physical or mental health conditions. Yet most don’t ask for — or receive — disability-related accommodations.

Let’s make health care more accessible for everyone. Share this post to help raise awareness and encourage people to ask for the accommodations they deserve. Read about it at https://bit.ly/4i94UHH
