In my 22 years of being a massage therapist the terms masseuse and masseurs have never sat well with me. I’ve always felt that they lend people to believe that massage is a gesture for sexual pleasure because at some point in history it got moved away from the medical community and became infamous with bath houses and prostitution. In the last 40 years or so the people in my profession have worked extremely hard to remove that stigma and educate the public on the actual health benefits of massage. The public has moved our manual touch therapy from being acceptable medical treatment before pharmaceuticals, to bath houses and prostitution, to “it must be nice to get a massage” as if you’re high maintenance for seeking services, and into getting back to utilizing manual therapeutic touch to improve health and wellness.
Please stop referring to people who practice massage therapy as masseuses or masseurs and just call us Massage Therapists.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.er
