Rock Steady Boxing Greater Midland

Rock Steady Boxing Greater Midland Rock Steady Boxing enables people with Parkinson’s disease to fight their disease by providing non-contact boxing-style fitness programs.

A worldwide non-profit, serving over 63, 000 fighters fighters, on 19 countries. Rock Steady Boxing, the first and only boxing program of its kind in the country, was founded in 2006 by former Marion County Prosecutor, Scott C. Newman, who is living with Parkinson’s.The seed for what would eventually become Rock Steady Boxing was planted when Newman began intense, one-on-one, boxing training just

a few years after he was diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson’s at the age of 40. Newman witnessed the dramatic improvement in his physical health, agility and daily functioning through the intense and high energy workouts. Newman’s quality of life improved dramatically in a short time due to his fighting back against Parkinson’s disease. Private donations and a personal passion to help others living with Parkinson’s allowed Newman to open a small gym and boxing ring in a donated corner of a corporate employee gym as Rock Steady’s first home. Recent studies, most notably at Cleveland Clinic, focus on the concept of intense “forced” exercise, and have begun to suggest that certain kinds of exercise may be neuro-protective, i.e., actually slowing disease progression. Our classes help, by moving your body in all planes of motion while continuously changing the routine as you progress through the workout. Rock Steady classes are divided into four levels based upon each person’s unique Parkinson’s symptoms and overall level of fitness. These classes have proven that anyone, at any level of Parkinson’s, can actually lessen their symptoms and lead a healthier/happier life. We are in your corner, to help you fight back against Parkinson’s.

WAY TO GO COACH 🥊❤️🥊

This week's Plan of the Week focuses on defensive moves in boxing! These skills are essential for maintaining good posture, keeping hands up, and improving balance. Defensive techniques like footwork (side-stepping, pivots, stepping backward), blocks, slips, bobs, rolls, and weaving all contribute to better stability, weight shifting, and dynamic balance.

Footwork is key in boxing, and these movements help our fighters build strength, coordination, and recall combinations, all of which translate to improved everyday mobility.

A huge shoutout to the Master of Occupational Therapy students at Saginaw Valley State University, who ran stations focused on fine motor skills for their project this week! Their efforts helped our fighters refine their control and precision. In addition to the fine motor lab, they also organized a relay race with "The Floor is Lava", adding even more fun and movement to the session!

And, in true Rock Steady Boxing fashion, when two of our fighters reached the box step station, they took it literally—and turned it into a dance party!

Keep moving, FIGHTING BACK, and having fun! 🥊

This week, we put the spotlight on FOCUS MITTS!🥊💥

Boxers worked one-on-one with coaches to challenge their balance, coordination, and reaction time, all while improving technique and endurance. Focus mitt training allows for a realistic fight scenario that push our boxers to move, think, and react with precision. It’s not just about hitting the mitts—it’s about strategy, footwork, and confidence!

🔹Why it Matters for Parkinson’s:
✔️ Engages multiple systems at once
✔️ Encourages full range of motion and proper technique
✔️ Builds trust and connection between boxer & coach
✔️ Can be modified for all abilities

✨ Special thanks to the Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) Master of OT students for designing an incredible "Fine Motor Cycle Bootcamp" that kept our boxers engaged and challenged!
