The best part about milk supply?
Once it’s established it can always increase again!
‼️Frequent milk removal and fully emptying your breasts are the most important things to do when supply dips.
In our practice, we’ve seen these ✋ common practices lead to a supply dip:
😴 baby sleeping through the night without pumping or dream feeding • REMEMBER you want to be removing milk at least every 6 hours at night to keep supply up.
🍼 supplementing without pumping • any time you give a bottle, be sure to pump so the body knows to account for the extra milk your baby is taking • REMEMBER, even if you don’t see milk coming out the stimulation is signaling to your brain to increase supply.
⌚️strict feeding schedules • not feeding on demand can impact the number of hormone receptors that support milk production so watching baby for cues and feeding frequently can help maintain your supply (and their wellbeing) • REMEMBER, watch the baby, not the clock & practice loose routines, not strict schedules
🛡️long term ni**le shield use • ni**le shields decrease the amount of input your brain gets when baby latches which can lower supply. REMEMBER, if you have to use a ni**le shield, have a plan in place from day 1 to get rid of it ASAP.
🪢 tension and tongue ties • when tongue movements are restricted, it may lead to baby not feeding efficiently. REMEMBER, around the 8-12 week mark it’s up to baby to keep supply up (not hormones anymore).
If you see a supply dip and aren’t sure how to fix it, please reach out! We would love to support you in person or over text/email.
