Reading with your child is a simple yet important part of their day. By exposing them to books of all different types, you are giving them access to new vocabulary, providing them with an understanding of new concepts, modeling language and most importantly giving them your 1:1 attention.

If I could give one piece of advice to parents to help increase their child's communication skills, taking 10-15 minutes each day to read a book with your child would be my recommendation. Play is the foundation for learning. From a young age, children need time to navigate within their surroundings. Children become more creative, develop their own interests, learn how to problem solve and improve their leadership abilities as they move through the different stages of play.

While engaging with others, children use a variety of communication styles to interact with their toys and peers. It’s important as a parent to actively participate in your child’s play and use language to support their development. Taking turns, sharing, asking for items, making comments and labeling items are all different ways in which you can actively participate in your child’s learning and development through play.

Communication is divided into two categories. When we are looking at a child’s speech, we are determining how they use their voice to produce different sounds in words. On the other hand, language refers to the way in which we use body language and words to communicate our wants and needs.

There are three different areas within speech that include:
1. fluency (also known as stuttering)
2. voice (e.g. laryngitis, nodules, etc)
3. articulation (i.e. how we pronounce consonants and vowels)

Language on the other hand, also has three different areas that include:
1. understanding of language (e.g. following directions, understanding questions, etc)
2. use of language (combining words into sentences, grammar, etc)
3. social language (understanding social cues, sharing, having a conversation, etc).

Speech and language skills are such an essential part of a child's development. These skills are important for them to navigate within the world independently.
