The practice of yoga is a spiritual one. It is a practice that engages not only the body, but the mind and the soul. It is a pathway to connection with not just yourself, but the world around you. It tunes you into your own frequency, the frequency of the Earth, and the universe as a whole if you want it to. The space in which you practice yoga should be a sacred one. A place where you feel safe. A place where you are open to feel that connection. Your mat, wherever you choose to lay it, should feel like a sanctuary.
Healthy Life Yoga is my sanctuary.
When I first started attending as a student, before ownership was even a glimmer of an idea, it was where I chose to go to process my grief. Jason and I had lost a pet, but not just any pet. It was the pet that we adopted once we realized that we were never going to be able to have children. He was a huge part of our grieving process and that loss was a setback for me that I hadn’t expected so soon. He was only 9 and I was spiraling.
On my mat, the teachers there showed me how to move my body in ways that not only benefited me on a physical level but a mental and spiritual one as well. They taught me how to process my emotions in a way that's healthy for me, that didn’t allow me to sink under the wave of depression that seemed to be ominously waiting to crash in. The 8 limbs of the practice, the history of the practice, was shown to me through their words and their presence and I fell in love with it all. It was healing. It became a space where I could go, lay my worries at the door for an hour, and leave with a clearer head should I have to pick them up when I left.
I have cried on my mat when the world crashes in. I have let out frustrations on my mat when things don’t feel fair or right. I have come to rest on my mat when I am exhausted from the day to day stress that life has to offer. But, I have also found a peace on my mat that I didn’t think existed for me inside of a mind riddled with anxious thoughts. I have done all of these things inside the four walls of this studio because I felt safe, because I felt loved, and because I felt like I was in a space that held space for me.
When we took over ownership in 2020 it was incredibly important to me to uphold the energy that already resided within the walls from the community that was there to greet me when I needed it. We wanted to be a space where everyone was welcomed, where everyone felt heard, seen, loved, and cared for. The people who come through our doors aren’t just nameless faces who come in and practice for an hour and leave. They are a part of something so much bigger.
That is what a yoga studio is and should always be. That is what WE are and what we are about. Our studio is a space that is sacred and spiritual. It is a space that is warm and inviting to anyone who crosses our threshold. A space where nothing is expected of you other than for you to show up for yourself in whatever capacity that may look like that day. We have had people come into the studio and lay down through the whole practice because they needed a safe space to leave the loudness in their mind for a while. We understand that. Movement is the bare minimum of what this practice is about and anyone who tells you differently doesn’t understand just how big this tree is or deep those roots go.
If you’re feeling like you need a space to rest, to connect back to the person you were or heal so you can become the person who is waiting for you, come give us a try. See what we are about. There is no better place to start a yoga journey than in a traditional yoga studio and we would love nothing more than to be a part of this with you.
Until we see you, take care of yourself. There is only one you in the universe and we need you to be here.
