📣 Virginia launches VENA, a first-of-its-kind emergency food assistance program to replace November SNAP benefits during the federal shutdown. Benefits begin Nov. 3 with weekly distributions to existing EBT cards. $1 million in emergency funding goes to food banks to support families facing 1-2 day delays.

💕 Honored to be recognized at today’s Special Session for our work on reproductive healthcare. Thank you to legislators who celebrated our Momnibus bills with us!

This summer, 12 comprehensive Momnibus bills became law in Virginia, backed by $10+ million in funding. These policies are now supporting Virginia families with:

💗 Extended Medicaid coverage through 12 months postpartum
🫶🏽 State-funded doula services
🔍 Healthcare provider bias prevention training
🫂 Enhanced perinatal mental health resources
📍 Targeted support for underserved communities

These evidence-based policies address Virginia’s maternal health crisis and support the families facing the highest risks.

Grateful to have been part of this victory — and to every community member who shared their story and demanded better: thank you. 🫂

🪩 Seven years ago, Birth in Color started with a vision: culturally rooted care, reproductive justice, and community power.

We’ve accomplished so much in so little time, and at the end of it all, we can’t help but want to celebrate the people who make it all possible — YOU. Our supporters, our clients, our birthworker advocates.

Together, we’ve provided doula services across the state, bridged maternal health gaps (especially in rural Virginia), and even expanded our efforts to train the next generation of doulas at Virginia Union University.

November 8th, we’re celebrating the groovy way, honoring the bold spirit of the ‘70s when voices rose, barriers broke, and reproductive justice took center stage. 💛
