Is it sexaddiction (space purposefully omitted 😜 ) or is it out-of-control sexual behavior??
Does it matter what we call it?
Yes...and no.
Generally speaking, when people are describing a set of sexual behaviors that feels compulsive, shameful, and difficult to stop they use the label of sexaddiction. These behaviors usually lead to living dishonestly and outside of one's values, damaging relationships and self-esteem.
Doug Braun Harvey, renowned sextherapist and author, defines this set of behaviors as out-of-control sexual behavior, or OSCB. The difference in the descriptive labels is that sexaddiction tends to hold a more rigid definition of what behaviors determine whether it is an addiction, and a more rigid treatment model.
OCSB, on the other hand, empowers the individual to determine what behaviors are not working for them in their lives. Treatment focuses on sexual health and living within one's values.
At The Healing Group, our therapists recognize that living in a place of shame, dishonesty, and distress is no way to live. They are specially trained to support clients (and partners) of those dealing with OCSB, and can help you find healing.
