In three years active with HB S&R, I was able to spend quality time with HBPD officers both on-duty, during ride-alongs and evidence searches, and off-duty during our beach and pool parties, and summer camping trips.

I learned that police officers are very kind and caring people, with a great sense of humor. When they’re on the job, they can turn on the command presence when they need to deal with criminals.

A life-long memory happened when we were called out for an evidence search after a homicide. I was riding there with a HBPD detective when a bank robbery took place near our location. Officers were on scene quickly and as the suspect fled the scene, he began shooting. We diverted to that scene and joined the pursuit; when the suspect stopped to exchange gunfire again, my officer told me to hide under the dashboard. As I crouched down and pulled my helmet on, dozens of shots rang out. At that moment I realized that going into burning buildings is much safer than dealing with shooting criminals.
