āWhy I Like Trump ā An Honest Answer from a Christian Pastorā
People ask me all the time, āAlex, why do you like Trump? What is it that you like about him? Heās not a Christian⦠heās not this⦠heās not thatā¦ā They go down the whole list. And honestly, Iām not here to defend whether he is or isnāt a Christian. I donāt know his relationship with Jesus. I canāt tell you what heās professed, and it doesnāt appear that he fully embraces my faith. I get that.
But Christians always want to know, āThen why do you like him?ā
Well, here it isā¦
I heard a pastor say something the other day that hit me hard. He said Trump is like an Old Testament judge ā one of those people God raised up for such a time as this. And when you look at the judges in Scripture, every single one of them had something that, in our eyes, should have disqualified them. That is the point.
Judges God Used ā Flaws and All
Here are just a few:
š¹ Samson ā A womanizer with no discipline
š¹ Ehud ā The left-handed assassin nobody took seriously
š¹ Gideon ā Fearful, insecure, hiding in a winepress
š¹ Jehu ā Wild, reckless, and aggressive
š¹ Jephthah ā Rejected, illegitimate, and rash
š¹ Deborah ā A woman leading in a culture that didnāt value female leadership
š¹ Barak ā Hesitant, lacked courage, and needed someone elseās faith
š¹ Othniel ā Too ordinary, nothing remarkable, but still chosen
And yet God used every single one of them. They were flawed. They werenāt the best examples of spirituality. Some of them had baggage, issues, and reputations that would have made people today dismiss them instantly. But God still used them to inspire hope, to turn hearts back toward Him, and to remind a nation that He was still at work.
šÆAnd that is exactly what I see with Trump today.šÆ
When I watched the State of the Union address last night, a couple of things solidified why I, as a born-again evangelical Christian, believe Trump is someone God is using in this moment.
He said plainly, āIām proud that there has been a tremendous renewal in Christianity, faith, and belief in God ā especially among young people.ā The President of the United States actually said that.
Then he shared the story of a young man who was shot in the head defending our country. Trump said he spoke with the soldierās mother, and she said, āSir, he is going to be all right. I know it. God is going to heal him.ā Trump admitted he didnāt see how that could be true. But she had a faith he had never seen in anyone. Then he pointed to them ā sitting there in the room ā testifying that God healed him.
Listen⦠you may not like Trump.
He may be arrogant.
He may be narcissistic.
He may be bombastic, loud, rough around the edges, exaggerate, or even lie.
He may be out for himself at times.
Name the flaw ā you can probably find it.
But just like the judges God used in the Old Testament, Trump is inspiring millions of people with hope.
ā
He is fighting for religious freedom.
ā
Formed a White House Faith office
ā
He is giving a voice to people who feel ignored.
ā
And whether people like it or not, he has stirred a renewed awareness of God, faith, and spirituality in this nation.
Although the judges were flawed, God still used them to wake up a generation.
And I believe God is doing the same thing today through President Trump.
It is a reminder that God uses imperfect people, and every one of us should be thankful for that truth ā because not one of us is sinless.
So maybe it is time.
āTime to stop criticizing him.
āTime to stop poking holes in everything he does.
āTime to stop being negative, condescending, and wishing ill on him.
šš¾Start praying, and let God use whoever He chooses to bring this nation back to Him.šš¾
