Weds April 16th

While some of our firefighters were already out for calls from the severe thunderstorm that rolled through the area, At Approximately 11:45pm Milan and Pine Plains Fire Departments were dispatched to a garage fire off of Mountain Rd in the Town of Milan. Upon the fire department’s arrival, they found a 1 1/2 story garage fully involved in fire and a several vehicles and excavating equipment outside of the garage on fire and in close proximity to the residence . A second alarm was quickly requested, bringing in additional resources.
Approximately 60 firefighters from eight area fire depts responded, shuttling water from approximately four miles away.

Milan, Pine Plains , Stanford, Rhinebeck, Red Hook, Tivoli and Livingston fire departments had the fire under control in just under two hours. West Clinton and Livingston were on standby in two of Milan fire stations. Also assisted at the scene by the New York State Police, Pine Plains FD ambulance, Dutchess county EMS, Duchess County Department of Emergency Response, Dutchess County fire investigation division, and the town of Milan Highway Department.

The fire was completely extinguished five hours later. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but not suspicious.

Firefighters had the last engine packed up and back in service by 6 AM just in time to go to work.

No injuries reported

First Assistant Chief Al Sardaro appreciated all the help from the surrounding departments

We would like to send our sincerest condolences to the Stanford Fire Company, and the Stramm family for the passing of Past Chief Robert “Cactus“ Stramm.

When Bob keyed the mic, it was unmistakeable who was on the other end. When you saw the silhouette of his signature cowboy hat in the driver seat of one of Stanford’s rigs, you knew exactly what you were going to get: a man who’s soul mission was to get the job done.

For those that knew him, underneath Bob’s prickly exterior was a pure heart, and compassion for his fellow man. A proud Navy Veteran, and more than 50 years in the fire service show Bob’s devotion to public service.

They don’t build them like Cactus anymore. Rest easy Chief, we’ve got it from here. God Speed.

Tonight at approximately 8:16pm units were dispatched for flooding condition on the Taconic State Parkway in area of Wilbur Flats RD. Upon arrival water was flowing across both north and south bound lanes. Due to the heavy flow and debris in road it was determined to shut both the south and north bound lanes due to safety concerns. After further investigations in the area we also had flooding on Academy Hill RD near north Rd where a 20 foot wooden bridge was found in road. We believe a dam broke on the pond on Academy Hill. Once the water subsided the Taconic was reopened.
