Essence Wellness

Essence Wellness I am a Certified Flower Essences Practitioner and a doula. They were discovered by an English physician, Dr. Edward Bach, in the 1930’s.

Bach Flowers are medicines that work on energetic levels (not on a chemical level, such as herbs or pharmaceuticals). The flower essences are made from the blooms of plants, shrubs, and trees. Dr. Bach developed this system of healing which addresses the mental and emotional roots of illness. By balancing out the body’s emotional and mental symptoms, the physical body is strengthened and therefore better able to heal itself. Bach Flower Essences are gentle, extremely effective, and completely safe for all people, from birth and beyond – even animals can be helped by the essences! Since these medicines do not affect a person’s blood chemistry, they are safe to take along with other medicines and/or treatments. The flower essences do not interfere with traditional western medical treatments, so they are a wonderful option for those who want help with the side effects of a prescription drug. A doula provides non-medical support to birthing women and their families.

Remedy Spotlight: Sepia

Sepia is one of the most important homeopathic remedies for hormonal balance, emotional burnout, and states of deep tiredness. It is often thought of as the remedy for people who feel drained, irritable, and disconnected from those around them.

It has a special affinity for women’s health but can be used in men and children too when the overall picture matches.

Think of Sepia when
• There is irritability or indifference towards family or loved ones
• The person feels better for vigorous exercise like dancing or running
• There is a dragging sensation in the pelvis or a feeling as if “everything will fall out”
• Menstrual periods are irregular, heavy, or accompanied by mood swings
• The person feels worse in a warm room and better in cool air

Top uses
• Hormonal imbalance during PMS, menopause, or after childbirth
• Emotional burnout with a flat, indifferent mood
• Chronic constipation with a sinking feeling in the abdomen
• Skin issues such as brown patches, acne, or chloasma
• Vaginal thrush with itching and dryness

Emotional picture
The Sepia state often feels overwhelmed and withdrawn. The person may feel detached or irritable, especially towards those they love, and crave time alone. They can seem exhausted from giving too much to others and have little energy left for themselves.

Did you know?
Sepia is prepared from the ink of the cuttlefish. In homeopathy, it is used to bring balance and vitality back when there is physical and emotional heaviness.

European researchers recently investigated whether plain water could be potentized because while it is assumed that water plays a crucial role in homeopathy, it is unclear what specific functions water has in the generation, propagation, and maintenance of homeopathic potencies.

Their findings?
"Results using the solvatochromic dye phenol blue to detect and measure homeopathic potencies indicate that bulk water itself does not potentise and that unsuccussed water and water that has been succussed are no different. This indicates that what is potentised during cycles of dilution and succussion are the substances placed in water and not the water itself. In turn, this indicates that water is simply a carrier for the homeopathic signal. Evidence from the practice of homeopathy supports this conclusion."

Another wonderful insight from Dr. Lisa Samet...

"One of the things we love most about homeopathy is that it’s not a “one size fits all” method of healing. Most of us who know homeopathy know, there are no “headache” remedies, no “PMS” remedies, no “cough” remedies, but simply the remedy that the person who has any of these problems needs. Homeopathy is prescribed for the person, not the disease. I like to tell patients that if I have five people coming to see me for headaches this week, I can be almost sure they will each get a different remedy. This fact is often shocking to those new to homeopathy, because they’re used to mainstream medicine and its treatment of disease, not the individual.

Once we understand this, we understand that the homeopath’s job is not so simple. If there is no “headache” remedy, how exactly do we find the remedy for the person before us with a headache? The answer is that we hunt for the unique (or “strange, rare and peculiar”) symptoms that describe the headache itself as well as the person with the headache. And that hunt is so much easier when the patient is observant and aware of the most useful information to report.

Did You Know?

Homeopathy got its start in the U.S. following the emigration in 1825 of Dutch homeopathic physician Hans Gram. Upon arriving in New York City, Hans began to practice and write about homeopathy, and interest rapidly spread.

Physician followers of Hahnemann soon founded America’s first homeopathic medical school in Allentown, Pennsylvania, in 1835, called the North American Academy of the Homeopathic Healing Arts. This landmark moment was followed soon thereafter by the formation of the American Institute of Homeopathy in 1843 – America’s oldest medical society (four years before the American Medical Association – an association formed in large part as an attempt to thwart the rising popularity of homeopathy).

A recent study from Brazil assessed the impact of homeopathic preparations Sulphur 30CH and Calcarea carbonica 30CH, on Capsicum sweet pepper crops grown in a greenhouse or in the field.

Sulphur was found to improve plant growth and fruit size in the field, whilst Calcarea carbonica affected greenhouse plant height.

Although pests were present for all treated plants, the homeopathic preparations appeared to enhance plant growth and recovery after damage. Calcarea carbonica also showed promise in reducing fungal decay of sweet pepper fruits. This study highlights the potential for homeopathy to increase productivity and resilience of food crops grown in different horticultural environments.
