It’s “Wagging Wednesday,” our way of sharing a little joy midweek by introducing you to the pets who are part of our team’s families.

Meet Rosie, the beagle–catahoula mix belonging to Danielle, Life Forest’s Family Support Specialist. Rosie is an absolute goofball who knows no personal boundaries and has no manners. (That’s okay, we all have issues! 😂) She loves a good walk where she can terrorize the neighbors. No one is safe from her barks, jumps, or the swing of her happy tail.

Rosie is a snack-a-holic, a rescue from Mississippi, and was a much-wished-for gift for Danielle’s youngest son’s seventh birthday. Her age is a bit of a mystery. The rescue estimated around five, while the vet thinks she may be closer to two.

Pets like Rosie are a big part of the stories we carry with us through life. That’s why pets are are always welcome at Life Forest. 🌳❤️ 🐾

This week is National Grief Awareness Week.

Grief has no timeline. It changes us, it moves with us, and it becomes part of who we are. There is nothing wrong with still missing someone, whether a month has passed or many years.

Alan D. Wolfelt, Ph.D., writes in The Wilderness of Grief:

“My grief journey has no one destination. I will not ‘get over it.’ The understanding that I don’t have to be done is liberating. I will mourn this death for the rest of my life.”

These words speak to a truth many carry quietly. Grief does not ask us to forget. It becomes a companion that shifts over time, leaving us with the love, the memories, and the ways someone’s presence continues to shape our lives.

If you would like to share, you’re welcome to post a photo of someone you love and miss in the comments. Seeing the faces of those who shaped our lives can remind us that we grieve together, and that none of us carries this alone.

Life Forest Creator and Co-Founder Mel shared this reflection about her mother, Elise, whose life and spirit inspired the founding of Life Forest:

“Another year without you has come and gone, yet you are still with me in the choices I make and the lessons I have learned. You always spoke of your love for dogwood trees, but never planted one for yourself because they were ‘too expensive’ and now, your memorial dogwood tree grows in the center of Life Forest’s arboretum. Mom, your tree is surrounded by others now too, and with every visit your name is spoken with love. May Life Forest always be guided by your gentleness and kindness. I am proud to say your name, Elise.”

As the final day of 2025 fades into twilight, Life Forest Cemeteries invites our communities to gather for a peaceful tradition, a sunset snowshoe or winter walk concluding with a candlelight vigil to honor loved ones who have passed. This annual event blends the quiet beauty of nature with the shared healing that comes from remembrance and connection on 12/31 at 3:30 pm at Life Forest in Hillsborough, NH and Life Forest Whistle Ridge in Auburn, ME.

Did you know that Jessica, our Director of Community Engagement (and the person behind many of our social media posts), is also a minister and an end-of-life doula for both people and their companion animals?

Her work spans many tender moments. Sometimes she supports pets as they keep vigil with their person on hospice, helping them stay calm and connected. Other times she walks alongside families as they navigate difficult euthanasia decisions, offering guidance, presence, and compassion. She also supports families during at-home euthanasias when they want a peaceful, meaningful goodbye, and has even officiated pet burials here at Life Forest.

Jessica provides individual pet-loss bereavement support, facilitates grief groups and workshops, and also supports animals as they navigate the loss of their favorite person.

It is tender work, and it reflects the heart of our community: every bond matters, every story matters, every life is honored.

"When you watch a small child bury a parent, you realize the importance of offering them a gift for healing.

I am deeply grateful for the knowledge, commitment, and talents of the authors of “You Can Always Talk to Possum at Life Forest,” whose beautiful story and workbook allow me to sit beside a child and place something meaningful in their hands during one of the most traumatic and impressionable moments they will ever experience.

It breaks my heart to see how many children need this book, yet I am profoundly thankful to have such a meaningful gift to offer them."
