Today marks Labor Day, a holiday observed on the first Monday in September that pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers. Created by the labor movement in the late 19th century, Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894. To all our caregivers who work hard for our patients and each other every day — especially those who will be working on Labor Day — thank you for all you do!

We’re thrilled to announce that Milford Regional Medical Center has been named a Blue Distinction Center+ by Blue Cross Blue Shield for knee and hip replacement excellence.

This designation honors hospitals that go above and beyond—delivering high-quality surgical care with lower complication rates, fewer readmissions, and a strong focus on affordability. It’s a powerful reflection of the dedication, skill, and compassion shown by the entire team.

Thank you for setting the bar high and making a lasting impact on patient lives.

Four UMass Memorial Health hospitals have received the Blue Distinction Specialty Care designation for knee and hip replacement from national health insurer Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS)! The recognition highlights centers that "have demonstrated expertise in total knee and hip replacement surgeries" and "have lower complication rates and fewer hospital readmissions."

UMass Memorial Medical Center, UMass Memorial Health – Harrington Hospital, UMass Memorial HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital and UMass Memorial Health – Milford Regional Medical Center were all named Blue Distinction Centers by BCBS. The program, according to BCBS, "evaluates providers on their ability to deliver high quality and safe specialty care based on criteria that directly impact patient results — e.g., surgical team expertise and a history of better outcomes for patients."

On August 13, Milford Regional Medical Center's Community Benefits Committee hosted a meaningful forum with local food pantry leaders to foster collaboration, share resources, and better understand the challenges they face.

Together, the group explored:
- Partnerships with farms & businesses for food sourcing
- Strategies for securing donations
- Barriers like seasonal shortages, rising demand, and potential federal cuts

Reducing food insecurity is a key priority in our 2024 Community Health Needs Assessment—and this gathering marked an important first step toward expanding access to healthy food across our region.

Huge thanks to everyone who participated and for their dedication to supporting our community and strengthening local partnerships!

Meet Abbey Petinge, Medical Practice Supervisor and Medical Assistant at Medway Urgent Care (Milford Regional Physician Group).

"From a young age, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in healthcare. I've always been interested in the field of medicine and the science behind it, and I've always felt a calling to serve others. In high school, I started volunteering in the Emergency Department. I remember being inspired to watch the care teams combine their intelligence and compassion to help people both physically and emotionally. Not only was their acute illness taken care of, but their anxieties were eased as well.

There are a lot of 'favorites' when it comes to my job. One is the opportunity to make people's bad days better. Where I work in Urgent Care, our patients are never at their best when they check in. It is a great feeling when someone comes in with a medical issue, and they leave our clinic having it fully resolved. Even when that is not possible, I appreciate the chance to show them kindness in their moments of hardship.

There have been many memorable moments in my time with Milford Regional Physician Group, but I think the memories that will stick with me the longest are those made with my coworkers. I cannot emphasize enough the strong, nurturing relationships between staff members. Physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants treat you like a true teammate, and fellow Medical Assistants and LPNs constantly encourage and uplift one another. Being surrounded by like-minded individuals who care greatly about the care of patients and are genuinely invested in each other’s successes is not something I will easily forget.

I love working for Milford Regional Physician Group for several reasons. In addition to being a part of the unparalleled level of care provided to the communities served and the positive, team-oriented environment created, I am grateful for how they have supported me in my career progression. After starting here as a nearly new Medical Assistant years ago, I was fully encouraged in my return to school to complete my Bachelor's degree in healthcare administration. Now, I am the supervisor of our brand-new Urgent Care in Medway and am excited to continue growing in such a great company.

When I'm not at work, you can find me with my family, on walks with my husband, or pup sitting."

You are such an amazing caregiver and person, Abbey! We are so lucky to have you as part of our team.

Art Riffo, a lifelong tennis player and Hopedale High School varsity coach, was nearly sidelined by chronic hip pain. After trying physical therapy and cortisone shots with no success, he faced the possibility of surgery—until he discovered Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy.

Performed by Dr. Kevin Jillson at Milford Regional Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, PRP uses a patient’s own blood to promote healing in injured joints. It’s a minimally invasive option that helps athletes and active adults stay in the game.

Just weeks after treatment, Art was back on the tennis court playing singles—virtually pain-free.

His story shows that age and injury don’t have to mean giving up the game—especially with innovative treatments like PRP.
