Excited to announce the passing of my Integrative and Functional Nutrition boards!!

What is Integrative and Functional Nutrition?

Integrative and functional nutrition utilizes a systems-based approach to evaluate the many interacting factors that promote health or disease. It seeks to understand the root causes of system(s) imbalances that influence one’s biology, genetics, nutritional status and well-being. Integrative and functional nutrition uses a holistic, multi-dimensional evidence and practice-based approach to the nutrition care process. A comprehensive nutrition assessment helps the practitioner design a personalized treatment plan, tailored to the patient’s unique needs and lifestyle to support the highest expression of health and healing. This integrated approach can dramatically improve patient outcomes and quality of life.

Principles of Integrative and Functional Nutrition Therapy

* Nutrition affects cellular metabolism, dynamic physiological networks and gene expression.
* A minor imbalance within the body can produce a cascade of biological triggers with long latency effects that can eventually lead to poor health and chronic illness.
* Each individual functions in an environment with internal and external factors (physical, mental, social, cultural, spiritual) that influence interactions between the mind and body.
* Traditional, conventional, complementary, and alternative therapies are acknowledged as potential healing modalities.
* Each person is unique and this is recognized in a personalized clinical assessment and intervention plan that engages and empowers the patient in this process to restore optimal function, manage symptoms and promote overall health, vitality and well-being.

Contemporary Nutrition now offering InBody 570 scans, starting in November!

Why an InBody Scan would benefit you?

#1 Help reduce your risk for cardiovascular disease

One of the most important identifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease is your body composition and more specifically your visceral fat. Visceral fat is the body fat that is stored within the abdominal cavity surrounding the organs. Increased visceral fat leads to increased inflammation and changes the way our hormones are regulated. This can not only lead to disease but also makes it harder to lose weight. With the help of a registered dietitian, you can reduce your visceral fat and risk for disease, but it is important to track and identify it. Identifying this risk factor is one of the most important reasons to get an InBody test.

#2 Know your body composition

Increased body fat and suboptimal skeletal muscle mass can also put you at greater risk for cardiovascular and other metabolic diseases. A standard scale cannot accurately provide you with this information about your body composition. Without the content body fat percentage and skeletal muscle mass provides, it’s very difficult to understand what your weight on the scale means and whether you need to consider making changes to improve your body composition to prevent disease.

#3 Track your progress

Have you ever been trying to lose weight and it seems like that number on the scale will just not move, not matter how hard you work? So many of my clients get frustrated and even give up when they feel like they are not making progress. As we have determined the number on the scale is not a very useful measurement tool. So why would you use this to track your progress? By using body fat percentages and muscle mass as a measurement of success instead, you will be able to see your muscle mass rise even if your weight is not moving. Often when you begin working out your muscle mass rises while your body fat drops, preventing any movement in your total weight value. For some, being able to see this progress is important to them to stay motivated and continue on their path of a healthier lifestyle. Using InBody testing throughout this process can help you see the changes that are happening in your body and see how your overall health is improving and risk factor decreasing. Stop worrying about the number on the scale and look at the big picture with your body composition!

#4 Have more targeted workouts

Another reason InBody testing might be right for you is if you are an athlete looking to achieve peak performance. One of the cool features to InBody testing is that it breaks down your body composition into each segment of the body. So for avid athletes looking for targeted areas of workout, InBody can help. It can tell you if you need to work on your skeletal muscle mass in your legs versus your arms, or if your left arm has a little less muscle mass compared to your right arm. Change your work out routines and then track your changes through InBody. In addition to targeting workout, it has been shown that by simply tracking your body composition on a regular basis you can your boost endurance and shorten recovery periods from exercise.
The InBody scan and body composition testing can be an invaluable tool for your health. Assessing your body composition can not only help you reduce your risk for disease but allows you to understand more about your body than just the number on the scale.

If you’re interested in getting an InBody scan, contact Contemporary Nutrition today to get scheduled!

Please Note:

1. People with electrical medical devices such as a pacemaker or any metallic supports should NOT be tested on the InBody Scanner.

2. Women who are pregnant or menstruating are not recommended to use the InBody Scanner.

All these 10 year challenges out there.. I’m just over here celebrating 10 years of business!!! Crazy!!

Ever since my dietetic internship I knew I wanted to in some capacity have my own private practice. I liked the idea of establishing that rapport with individuals and building those relationships while combating their disease together and witnessing their progress over a course of time. 10 years ago today I took that leap and signed the papers that created my own business, Contemporary Nutrition. I first started out working in a gym with clients on weight management nutrition. And now over the years have expanded through two counties, credentialed with all major insurance companies, providing medical nutrition therapy to adult and pediatric clients in both a private practice setting as well as multiple in-patient hospital and rehabilitation centers. Helping people manage their cardiovascular diseases, diabetes management, gastrointestinal syndromes, bariatric surgery, cancer, wound healing, allergies, eating disorders and more all through food has been pretty cool and so rewarding. Feeling incredibly grateful for all the channels and outlets that helped with my growth thus far and for all those who have and continue to intrust in me as their local Registered Dietitian and for allowing me to be a part of your journey to better health.
