Milford Cemetery Milford Cemetery originated from a portion of a piece of property owned by Pastour Peter Prudden. The first burial took place in 1644 of a young boy.

The first adult burial took place

With the holiday season approaching, we would like to remind everyone of our Rules & Regulations. These Rules & Regulations are available in print at out Milford Cemetery Office our office hours are M-F 8:00 am - 4:00 pm

GENERAL RULES AND REGULATIONS
Realizing a mutual desire to have a well-maintained and serene cemetery. the Association has contained herewith certain regulations. They exist so as to allow individuals equal rights and to protect the conscientious lot owner. As we all know the mowing and trimming along with the removal and disposal of decorations is an ever-increasing financial burden. Environmental controls have also had an impact on our maintenance. With this in mind we ask you to cooperate and adhere to these regulations so that we all can have pleasant and peaceful surroundings These regulations are subject to change from time to time as may be required by the Board of Directors.
l. The Cemetery shall be open to visitors only during daylight hours Through traffic is forbidden. Permitted vehicles shall proceed at a slow speed keeping strictly, to roadways whether traveling or parking.
2. The Association retains all rights to plan and alter the general layout and landscaping of the cemetery which includes but not limited to all interment sections, entrances, water faucets, shrubbery, trees, grade and drainage The Superintendent shall have entire charge of planting in accordance with the general landscaping, that may he adopted from time to time.
3. The Cemetery Association reserves the right, without notice or liability on its part to remove from any lot any items it may consider objectionable in its sole discretion.
4. A Certificate of Ownership of burial rights subject at all times to such regulations as may be determined by the Board of Directors, will be issued upon full payment of said burial rights. A purchase of a grave includes the first two interment rights, additional rights (maximum of two) must be purchased for any one cremains burial. (see appendix for grave description) A total of four interments are permitted per any one grave with respect to its description.
5. The purchasing of graves and Interments of individuals is restricted. To qualify, individuals must either be present or past legal residents of Milford or they must have immediate family members (sec appendix) interred in the cemetery.
6.Transfer of ownership of burial sites shall he upon the approval of the Milford Cemetery Association in which has the right of first refusal. Notice of proposed sale by owner of burial rights shall be made in writing Ninety (90) days prior to proposed transfer. Failure to notify Association may result in the exercise of the Association’s right of first refusal and repurchase of the burial rights.
7. The Milford Cemetery Association and that of its employees or agents shall have the right to enter upon any lot for the, purpose of policing, cleaning or maintaining such lot or for whatever it deems necessary.
8. No interment or disinterment shall be made unlit the proper certificate/permit required by law, and all other information necessary to complete the records of the Association, shall have been furnished to the Superintendent. All excavations, openings and closings of graves shall be made only by the Superintendent and his assistants.
9. No interment or disinterment shall be held until all required fees are paid in full.
10. All persons are forbidden to pick any flower, wild or cultivated, to break or injure any tree or shrub, to enter upon any lot without authority to lie down or lounge thereon, or in any way to injure or deface any monument, vault, structure or other property upon the grounds.
11. Funeral processions upon entering the cemetery shall be under the control and subject at all times to the directions of the Superintendent of the cemetery.
12. An order for the opening of a grave shall be given to the Superintendent no less that Sixteen (16) working hours prior to scheduled interment, In the winter months a period of Twenty (20) working hours is required. All openings are subject to weather condition and work load.
13. No funerals shall be permitted in the Cemetery on Sundays or Cemetery holidays, except in the case of death from a contagious disease, when immediate burial is ordered by the Board of Health, or by special contract.
14. Burial vaults of concrete, non-corrosive metals or other durable materials of the guaranteed types are required. Wooden enclosures are not permitted. Vaults must withstand deterioration and must support ground and equipment pressures from above.
15. Cremains may be interred in an urn or suitable container. No more than four (4) cremains may be interred in any one adult or cremains grave (refer to # 4 & appendix) / or two standard size urns in one columbarium niche.
16. No fi****ms, refreshments, intoxicating liquors or narcotics of any kind shall be brought onto the cemetery grounds; except that fi****ms are permitted in the case of a military funeral.
17. The City of Milford's ordinances considering animals, regarding both leash and pooper scooper laws are adopted and strictly adhered to by the Cemetery Association.
Flowers. Plants, Winter Arrangements and Decoration
(This section defines those items that are permitted [see also appendix], Any and all items not specifically set forth are prohibited)
18. Milford Cemetery Association does not assume responsibility for loss or damage to any flowers, vases, funeral pieces, plants, winter decorations. shrubs or any items placed upon burial graves.
19. Any item which becomes unsightly, overgrown or which interferes with burials or other cemetery work will be trimmed or removed. Temporary funeral home markers will be removed once permanent memorial is set or if it is 111 poor condition.
20. Potted plants are permitted for a period of ten (10) days only following, the designated holidays; Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day, and National Memorial Day. Those wishing to retain any flowers, potted plants or items must remove them prior to the collection by the cemetery for disposal.
21. Annual flowers may be planted on the burial side of a monument provided it is within a one-foot distance from its base. The use of any type of border material such as plastic, wood, stones, or metal will not be permitted. A brick border is permitted so long as it is recessed into the ground to prevent any type of movement and it is within the one foot permitted area.
22. Planting of any kind is prohibited on flush marker graves which include Cremains, Infant, and Veterans Circle Sections.
23. Cut fresh flowers are permitted any time so long as they are placed in a cemetery approved flush ground vase. One of these flower vases is permitted per adult. cremains, or infant grave. Tin, glass, urns, planters, or containers other than an approved flower vases are prohibited.
24. The use of any type of decorations (see appendix) are prohibited regardless of placement. Loose items such as stones, shells or wood-chips are prohibited. Any item of any type that is intended to be secured to the memorial will not be permitted, unless approved by the cemetery Superintendent.
25. Only Winter planter boxes, potted arrangements and wreaths are permitted between November 1st and February 28th at family's responsibility and risk. Winter Blankets and Pillows arc prohibited. Milford Cemetery Association assumes no responsibility for loss or damage to these arrangements.
26. The American Flag (no substitutes) is permitted provided it is placed adjacent to an upright monument, if the flag is used with a proper staff, it may not exceed the height of the monument by more than six inches. The American flag must be in and remain in respectable condition. When placed on Memorial Day, it will remain until July 4th.
27. The planting of shrubs is no longer permitted.
28. Only agents and employees of Milford Cemetery Association may move or remove any tree or shrub in the cemetery. The association shall not be responsible for damage to or death of any tree or shrub in the cemetery.
29. All recreational activity is prohibited.
Monuments & Flush Ground Markers
30. A monument or marker (see appendix) may be installed (by cemetery employee or by recognized monument dealer) upon graves where permitted so long as all required fees have been paid.
31. A complete sketch and design including dimensions of proposed monument or marker must be submitted to the Superintendent for approval together with appropriate fee prior to being ordered or placed
all 32. The foundations for monuments and markers will be constructed by the employees of the association at the expense of the owner of burial rights or other legal representative. All foundation orders must be received thirty (30) days prior to any stones being set. Installations will be scheduled as weather and work load permit.
33. Only one flush ground marker (measured 2' x 1') shall be placed on any one grave and no such marker shall be set to embrace two or more graves unless used in the place of a monument.
34. All Monuments are required to have bases unless the monument is to match an existing family monument (subject to approval) No corner markers shall be permitted.
35. The sizes as stated are given as the maximum allowable (except where otherwise stated) and pertain to indicated sections in both Milford and Kings Highway Cemeteries,
Companion Graves (aka Double Depth)

36. No person shall be permitted to remove any marker or monument from the cemetery without the consent of the owner of rights and the approval of the Association.
37. In no case will the Association or any of its Officers, Directors, or Employees be responsible for any damage to or loss of any marker, monument, tree, shrub, or any other article which may be placed in the cemetery by any person.
APPENDIX
1. Monuments: Any permitted memorial that stands above the ground.
2. Flush Markers: Any permitted memorial which when placed has its surface level with the surrounding ground.
3. Description of graves: Companion: Permits the interment of two full burials in one grave, two cremains or combination Side by Side: Permits the interment of one full and one Cremains or two cremains.
Cremains Grave: Location which permits the interment of cremated remains only
4. Immediate Family: Father, Mother, Child, Sibling, and Spouse.
5. Decorations and personal items are not permitted (except where noted). Items made of plastic, ceramic, glass, paper, fabric, metal, wood, rubber etc.
