HB414 Has Passed! A Historic Moment for Dental Hygiene in Utah
We are thrilled to share that HB414 has officially passed and barring a veto from the Governor will become law in May. This is a significant advancement for dental hygiene practice in Utah and for the patients and communities we serve.
With the passage of HB414, we can now add hospitals to the list of public health settings a licensed dental hygienists in Utah is now recognized to provide care in:
Hospitals
Long-term care facilities
Assisted living facilities
Residences of the homebound
Community health clinics
Public health agencies
Schools
Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs)
Mobile Dental Health Programs
This legislation strengthens access to care across the state and reinforces the essential role dental hygienists play as primary oral healthcare providers.
This milestone was made possible because of advocacy efforts led by the Utah Dental Hygienists' Association and the dedication of members who support legislative initiatives that move our profession forward.
Now the work continues.
The UDHA Legislative Committee will be actively working with our lobbyist and focusing on:
Educating dental hygienists on practicing in these expanded settings
Building relationships with hospital systems and healthcare associations
Advocating for integration of dental hygienists within interdisciplinary medical teams
Supporting implementation and awareness of this new law
