Did you know that the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children see an orthodontist starting at the age of 7? As this is the age where many permanent teeth are starting to erupt, an examination along with a panoramic xray can help to catch problems with tooth eruption early on, such as those erupting off course (which could potentially resorb the roots of neighboring teeth and result in tooth loss). Preventative treatments may be recommended to help guide these teeth into place or create space where it is needed. Certain treatments such as upper jaw expansion and face mask therapy (for crossbites) are also more effective at an early age when bone sutures have not yet fused and the upper jaw can still be made wider and postured forward. If no problems are detected and treatment is not recommended, patients will be enrolled in our supervisory program for monitoring every 6 months-1 year. If you have questions or are unsure if your child has any orthodontic problems, call our office today or visit our website to schedule a free consultation with one of our doctors!
