The seborrheic dermatitis community needs your help.

We need real people with moderate to severe for a paid photoshoot. There's a lack of images that accurately reflect the condition on diverse skin types, which can make it challenging for those with the condition to understand what they're experiencing and get the right care.

You can help.

Sign up for a paid photoshoot. Your participation can help improve education and awareness!

It's January which means it's time to start thinking about scheduling your annual skin check for 2022. Skin checks are vital to ensure that your skin is healthy and there are no abnormalities or signs of melanoma. Early detection can save your life!

Check out this amazing local story that highlights just how important regular skin checks and early detection are:

Two NHL teams have combined to give ice hockey fan Nadia Popovici a $10,000 scholarship for medical school as a thank you for advising Vancouver Canucks assistant equipment manager Brian "Red" Hamilton to get a mole behind his neck checked out.

What does SPF mean anyway?
We’re excited to share some information from our friends ! One of the very first questions we get about sunscreen is what does the SPF number mean? The SPF number in sunscreen tells you how long the sun’s UV rays would take to redden your skin when using the product exactly as directed versus the amount of time without any sunscreen. For an example, with SPF 30 it would take you 30 times longer to burn than if you were not wearing sunscreen.

Physical vs. chemical sunscreens:

What is a physical sunscreen?
Physical sunscreens contain active mineral ingredients, such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. They sit on top of the skin to deflect and scatter damaging UV rays away from the skin and offer protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Physical sunscreens block a wide range of wavelengths and will not degrade with sun exposure.

What is a chemical sunscreen?

Chemical sunscreens contain chemical ingredients like Avobenzone, Octinoxate and Oxybenzone that create a chemical reaction when exposed to the sun. They work by changing UV rays into heat, then releasing that heat from the skin.
Chemical sunscreens do not offer as good protection against both UVA and UVB as do physical sun blockers.

What are the key differences between physical and chemical sunscreen?

Physical sunscreens:
- Do not degrade with sun exposure
- Works immediately after application
- Sit on top of the skin so they are less irritating
- Need to be reapplied more often due to rubbing or sweating off
- Better option for those with sensitive skin

Chemical Sunscreens:
- May be a better choice while swimming and need a water-resistant sunscreen.
- Does not come off as quickly with activities that make you sweat. - Absorbs quickly into the skin.
- Requires about 20 minutes after application to start protecting your skin.
