🚨 Tooth Tip Tuesday 🚨

Just because they are “old” does NOT mean they don’t have any teeth.

🤯 I have been told many of time by clients “ they don't have any teeth they are to old” which can be true in some cases but majority of time is not true! Here is why…

🦷 At 5 years of age, a horse should have lost all of its baby teeth and have all of its adult teeth erupted through the gums. At this stage, a horse’s tooth root is as long as it will be for the rest of its life. Horses’ teeth do not grow; they erupt continuously throughout their lifetime. This is why some horses at 25 years of age or older may or may not still have all of their teeth. It is very uncommon for a horse to lose every tooth in its mouth before it dies.

📸 36 Year old mare as you can see still has plenty of teeth left to chew but here are some of the issues found in her mouth.
❗ Missing her lower first molar ( #306)- Causing her upper molar ( #206) to overgrow
(When a horse is missing a tooth from old age or other reasons it doesn't give the opposing tooth anything to wear on. This is what we would call a step tooth.)
❗ Lower 2nd and 3rd molars ( #307- #308) have very sharp points and are overgrown this has caused the horse to form a wave.
❗ Some cupping or smoothing of the surface of her teeth caused by old age

🦷She still has plenty of teeth to eat and chew but without yearly dentals she has formed a step tooth, a wave, extremely sharp points and uneven wear. This is why it is VERY important to have all your horses checked young, old, big, and small!!

😁 it’s Friday!!

🦷 When the arc of the front teeth (incisors) curve upward, we call it a "Smile"

This is a very common incisor alignment seen in horses that do not get yearly dentals!

❗ It is very important to make sure your horses get dentals that include incisor alignment. Without proper alignment of the incisors the molars will continue to wear unevenly, and interfere with proper grinding of food. Thorough and proper dental care is crucial for your horses overall health.

The 🔑 to your horses yearly dental.....

❗️INCISOR ALIGNMENT❗️

The incisors play a crucial roll in the overall function of your horse's entire mouth.

🦷 Efficient Grazing and Biting- Horses are natural grazing animals and proper alignment allows for effective cutting of forage

🦷 Balanced Chewing & Wear - Horses chew in a circular motion, without proper incisors alignment the horse has restricted jaw motion ( side-to-side )

🦷 Prevention of Dental Problems - Hooks/Ramps on molars, wave mouth, step teeth, TMJ stress or pain

🦷 Impact on Behavior and Performance - Head tossing, bit resistance, poor overall performance, reluctant to eat or chew properly

❌ Parrot Mouth (Overbite)
❌ Monkey Mouth (Underbite)

As horses age, their teeth wear differently. Be sure to schedule yearly dental exams for all horses- regardless of their shape, size or age, including donkeys, minis, and drafts.

❓ Did you know....

💧 Excessive saliva in a horse can be a sign of dental issues or another problem in their mouth. The saliva acts as a lubircation to help smooth out any irritation throughout the mouth

🦷 Sharp enamel points
🦷 Loose, infected or broken teeth
🦷 Retained baby teeth
🦷 Uneven wear
🦷 Foreign objects (Sticks, foxtail, or burrs)
These issues can cause discomfort when chewing. leading to excessive salivation.
