June 25th is World Vitiligo Day.

Vitiligo is a non-contagious autoimmune disease that causes areas of skin to lose color, resulting in spots and patches of lighter skin. It affects over 100 million people and while it is non-life-threatening, it can have significant psychological and sociological impacts on those who have it. There is currently no cure, but various treatment options are available to help restore lost skin color and prevent new spots from appearing.

Today is National Don't Fry Day, an essential reminder to prioritize skin protection as we head into the long weekend and warmer months.

Remember to apply sunscreen and exercise caution when spending prolonged periods of time outdoors. Sunscreen plays a vital role in protecting your skin, but it's just one part of comprehensive sun protection. Seek shade when possible and wear sun-protective clothing to minimize exposure to harmful UV rays.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month.

This month is devoted to raising as much awareness as possible around the importance of getting regular skin checks and protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the US, affecting one in five Americans during their lifetime. All it takes is a few simple lifestyle changes to keep your skin healthy and cancer-free:

✔️Wear sunscreen (broad-spectrum SPF 30 minimum) every day on exposed skin
✔️Seek shade during the sun’s peak hours
✔️Wear protective clothing as we head into the warmer months
✔️Get annual skin exams
✔️See a dermatology provider for any new or changing spots on your skin

Dr. Gail Mautner is a board-certified dermatologist. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, she attended Haverford College where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude and received her medical degree from New York University School of Medicine.

She completed her internship in Internal Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and her residency in Dermatology at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. Dr. Mautner is also a GAIN Trainer for Cosmetic Dermatology in the Galderma Aesthetic Injector Network.
