Improving strength and health before surgery, such as with pre-surgery physical therapy, is a potential strategy to prevent or reduce complications.

A new study finds that frequent daytime napping in adults is associated with a higher risk of developing high blood pressure; health experts comment that while napping isn’t unhealthy, it may be a sign of poor sleep quality.

Research Highlights: Frequent or usual daytime napping in adults was associated with a 12% higher risk of developing high blood pressure and a 24% high risk of having a stroke compared to never napping. Experts say napping, though not unhealthy, may ...

A recent study finds that greater height is associated with several health conditions in adults. Atrial fibrillation and peripheral neuropathy are only two of at least 127 associated clinical traits that impact quality of life.

Compared to unvaccinated individuals without prior COVID-19 infection, unvaccinated individuals with prior COVID-19 had 85% lower risk of acquiring COVID-19. Protection associated with natural immunity against reinfection ranged form 80.5% to 100%. Protection remained stable over the study period, up to 9 months after infection.

This cohort study compares rates of COVID-19 between unvaccinated adults who did and did not previously test positive for SARS-CoV-2.

Access to an adolescent-centered healthy weight management program, including bariatric or weight loss surgery, helped adolescents with obesity achieve the best long-term outcomes. Regardless of age at the time of surgery, patients who received a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy benefited from less obesity and concomitant organ damage. Adolescents with a parent who received bariatric surgery themselves had a higher weight before weight loss surgery.

Background Adolescent obesity is multifactorial, but parental history is the most significant risk factor. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is part of the multidisciplinary approach to adolescent weight loss. Objective We aimed to evaluate the effects of parental history of bariatric surgery, a...

Family members of ICU patients with COVID-19 were found to have high levels of PTSD symptoms. Factors associated with higher PTSD symptom scores were Hispanic ethnicity, female gender, and previous medication use for a psychiatric condition. Feelings of distrust and concern about the need to take clinicians information at face value without being personally present were common attitudes among family members.

This cohort study examines the prevalence of stress-related disorders in family members of patients admitted to the intensive care unit with COVID-19.

Adult vaccination rates and social determinants of health play an important role in affecting children’s mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. Stress surrounding the pandemic declined in children after adults started becoming vaccinated in December 2020. Social determinants of health that influenced children’s mental health include food insecurity, unemployment, disrupted access to health care, and having parents who were essential workers.

This cohort study investigates the association of individual and structural social determinants of health and vaccinations with child mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic in the US.
