A Fresh Start for Your Body and Mind This New Year
The holiday hustle has come to an end, and a new year is officially here. January is a powerful time to reset, refocus, and reprioritize your goals—especially when it comes to your physical and mental well-being.
During the winter months, I’ll be honest: I tend to become inconsistent with stretching, stress management, and even receiving massage myself. Like many of you, I’m tempted to curl up on the couch with my pup, scroll through Instagram, or binge-watch the latest Netflix series. While those moments feel harmless, over time they can quietly turn into habits that pull us away from our health goals.
This year, I’m committed to making some positive changes for myself—both as a massage therapist and as someone who values long-term wellness. I wanted to share a few of the areas I’m focusing on, as they may resonate with you as well.
Stretching
If stretching wasn’t a consistent part of your routine last year, consider setting a realistic goal. Start with one to two dedicated stretching days per week and gradually build from there until daily movement feels natural. Research consistently shows that regular stretching improves joint mobility, reduces muscle tension, and supports circulation—all of which help decrease pain and lower the risk of injury. Even 10–15 minutes a day can make a meaningful difference. There are many accessible resources online, from general daily stretches to more targeted routines based on your specific needs.
Stress Management
Stress affects all of us differently. Some manage it well, while others feel its impact more strongly on both the body and mind. These are a few practices I’ll be prioritizing this year:
• Breathwork: On high-stress days, spending just 5–10 minutes on deep, intentional breathing can help regulate the nervous system. Studies show that slow diaphragmatic breathing can lower cortisol levels, reduce heart rate, and promote a calmer, more focused state.
• Mindful Walking: Taking a walk in your neighborhood or a park—especially in areas with trees and natural scenery—can significantly reduce stress and improve mood. I intentionally disconnect from electronics during these walks to stay present, reflect, and fully engage with my surroundings. Exposure to nature has been linked to improved mental clarity, reduced anxiety, and enhanced emotional well-being.
Massage
Massage is a non-negotiable part of my self-care, yet I’ll admit I can be inconsistent when life gets busy. Without regular massage, stretching, or movement, the body tends to let us know—often through pain, stiffness, or fatigue. Research supports massage therapy as an effective way to reduce muscle tension, improve circulation, lower stress hormones, and support overall nervous system balance.
One of the best ways to stay consistent is by scheduling sessions in advance. Even when you’re feeling your best, maintaining regular massage can help prevent issues before they arise. Through my website, you can schedule sessions up to three months ahead. I encourage you to book your appointments, add them to your calendar, and give yourself something truly beneficial to look forward to.
We are capable of great things this year. I am truly rooting for you and the goals you’ve set for 2026—your body and mind deserve the care.
Thank you,
Jassica
