Back with some more ankle info!
You’ve probably heard the term “High Ankle Sprain” before. Maybe you have had the painful experience of a high ankle sprain yourself, or maybe your starting RB1 is out of your fantasy line-up for 8 weeks because of a high ankle sprain, and now you’re in real danger of walking down state street ringing a bell and yelling shame because you finished last in your league!
Whatever the case … it is worth your time to learn a little more about the injury.
-
High ankle sprains, or syndesmotic sprains, occur in the ligaments and other connective tissue (syndesmosis) between the two lower leg bones (tibia and fibula). The pain and injury site are usually higher up that a typical lateral “rolled” ankle.
-
The mechanism for this injury is a forceful external rotation of the foot, usually under load and due to contact.
-
High ankle ankle sprains are less common (14% of all ankle sprains) but typically more serious/limiting than lateral ankle sprains.
-
Depending on the severity of the sprain, and if a fracture occurs as well, surgery can be necessary for a full recovery.
