Back with some more ankle info!

You’ve probably heard the term “High Ankle Sprain” before. Maybe you have had the painful experience of a high ankle sprain yourself, or maybe your starting RB1 is out of your fantasy line-up for 8 weeks because of a high ankle sprain, and now you’re in real danger of walking down state street ringing a bell and yelling shame because you finished last in your league!

Whatever the case … it is worth your time to learn a little more about the injury.
-
High ankle sprains, or syndesmotic sprains, occur in the ligaments and other connective tissue (syndesmosis) between the two lower leg bones (tibia and fibula). The pain and injury site are usually higher up that a typical lateral “rolled” ankle.
-
The mechanism for this injury is a forceful external rotation of the foot, usually under load and due to contact.
-
High ankle ankle sprains are less common (14% of all ankle sprains) but typically more serious/limiting than lateral ankle sprains.
-
Depending on the severity of the sprain, and if a fracture occurs as well, surgery can be necessary for a full recovery.

Happy Halloween 🎃 👻!!!

Medical imaging reports can be really scary, but they don’t have to be!

Unfortunately, people are often given the results from medical imaging via written reports that use big medical jargon terms, and without practical explanations to what those terms mean.

MRI reports often include findings of “Disc Degeneration”, “Disc Herniations”, “Annular Fissure”, and “Spondylolithesis!” While all of those are accurate terms describing anatomical changes, they do not always correlate with an individual’s symptoms. People often have some, or all, of these findings on an imaging report, BUT they have NO symptoms. And on the other hand, a person can have a “clean” imaging report and still have significant pain symptoms.

Ultimately, it is important to use medical imaging as data point and piece of the overall puzzle when evaluating an individual’s pain experience.

Check out these slides to learn more about MRI findings from an awesome study by Brinjikji et al.

If you have any questions about an imaging report that you don’t understand, or anything else that is holding you back physically check out our website to schedule an evaluation!

10/21/2022

Lateral Ankle Sprains or “rolling your ankle,” occur when the ligament(a) on the outside of your ankle are torn to some degree. They are one of the most common injuries in sports and general activities. Lateral ankle sprains are often considered minor, and health care is rarely sought.

Unfortunately, around 40% of people who sustain an initial lateral ankle sprain will go on to develop chronic ankle instability, or CAI. This is a condition where symptoms of pain, weakness, limited range of motion, diminished self-reported function, and recurrent sprains exist for 12 months after the first injury.

Acute symptoms of swelling and pain often resolve before the injured tissues are completely healed, and that prompts people to return to higher level activities before their tissues are ready for it. It is very important for people who sprain their ankle to take some simple, but necessary steps to reduce their risk of developing CAI.

Check out these slides to learn more about lowering your risk for CAI, and stay tuned for some of our favorite exercises to include in your training!
