October is Eczema Awareness Month!

Eczema is a common, but non-contagious, skin condition that causes dry and itchy patches of skin on anyone, anywhere. In fact, 1 in 10 people will have eczema at some point in their lifetime. Symptoms of eczema can flare up if you contact an irritant or an allergen. There are treatments available to help you manage symptoms, but there isn't a cure.

Eczema is a common development primarily among children but also adults. Our skin acts as a barrier, keeping out germs and other things that can harm us and sealing in water. When eczema develops, the skin's ability to act as that barrier diminishes, allowing irritants, potential allergens, bacteria and viruses to enter more easily.

For many children, eczema is a chronic problem that will last for a lifetime. At this time there is not a cure, but it can be treated and controlled. Keeping the skin hydrated and preventing flare-ups help control eczema. For severe eczema, medications typically work best. Your dermatologist can help you really understand when to use what medication and other ways to best help your child.
