August is Children's Eye Health and Safety Month! Let's talk about the most common thing I am seeing with kids in my practice, and the importance of annual eye exams.

Thank you for wanting to share and shed light on this important topic!

I had an amazing time at the NOA Convention this year. This organization had a huge impact on me as a student, and I was incredibly thankful to attend again as a practicing OD. Being with my IUSO classmates, mentors, and mentee was good for my soul! I pray the NOA continues to equip and encourage this next generation of young docs!

Last year, I became a diplomate of the American Board of Optometry. I started this process 3 years ago, considered not pursuing it further after seeing a lot of negativity, but I ultimately decided it was right for me. I'd like to share with you why I did this, and for my fellow ODs, why it may be right for you too!

1. Accountability - I am the type of person that needs applied pressure 😅 deadlines...defined goals...all the things or I become complacent. Being self-disciplined was always a struggle. This process forces you to keep up with current changes in the profession, and constantly tests your foundational knowledge.

2. Practice Modality - when I started pursuing this, I was just coming out of a 3 year stint in corporate optometry, and walking right into ophthalmology. After not practicing medical for a few years, I didn't realize how out of practice I had become. In addition, all the ophthalmologists in the practice were board-certified, and uniformity in title was important to me.

3. Personal Achievement - Pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone is absolutely essential for growth. There was a sense of accomplishment in proving to myself that I'm clinically practicing at level I need to be, and going the extra mile to give my patients the best care I possibly can. You can be a great clinician without becoming board-certified, but this personally gave me better confidence.

4. Standard of Care - this year will mark a decade of being out of school 😳 With time, things change. The new grads have more experience than I do with new medications, and new technology. It's my responsibility to keep instep with the standard of care.

5. Identifying Weaknesses - you forget things over time, especially if you don't use them in clinic consistently. Going through this process DEFINITELY exposed some weak areas I needed to grow in. Continuing education is great, but it doesn't always fill in the gaps in a way that's helpful to me.

The profession is changing in ways I do not like, but I still love it. This is me contributing to the sanctity of it, and my personal growth ✨️

This is one of the many reasons why I love where I work. Our office manager posted this on our entrance door. It's a way for her to show us how much she cares, and a way for us to write, and encourage each other before we start our day 🥰

Happy National Doctor's Day to some of my favorite IUSO peeps! I'm very proud of all their accomplishments, and thankful I got to go through this process of becoming an optometrist with them. The struggle was REAL sometimes, but ultimately worth it, and we supported each other through it all.

As we come to the end of women's history month, I want to honor all my fellow female peers out there who are making a mark on our profession, and pray you have continued success and longevity! ❤️ 👓

Sandra and I enjoyed our time a few weeks ago at the career fair for Hillsboro Intermediate! I got to share about the profession I love with some very bright 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. Shout out to my mom for the cute eye chart earrings she made for me, and I love this shirt I found on Amazon!

I decided I wanted to become an optometrist when I was 14 years old, and I was inspired by my own hometown optometrist. I hope I was able to do the same for this next generation!
