I am incredibly proud of my daughter, Hannah! From the early days of casting and fitting braces for her on the kitchen counter as a baby to her recent milestone of joining Fab Lab as the second generation in our family-owned business, she has grown into her role beautifully! This is our Gauntlet AFO. This AFO is our most popular type of orthosis made at Fab Lab. This AFO is often prescribed to treat Posterior Tibial Tendon Disfunction (PTTD), and effectively stabilizes the ankle talocalcaneal, subtalar joints, and midtarsal. As you can see in this video, all of our Gauntlet AFOs are custom made to each patient model. This orthosis has a molded leather inner and outer shell lining, coupled with foam and plastic of your choice for supra-structure. Our standard Gauntlet includes a padded tongue and padded collar. Other clinical indications include Charcot foot, severe pronation or pes planus, and Chronic Achilles Tendonitis. Fab Lab customers have reported reduced clinical visits due to superior fit and higher quality materials.

This particular patient has severe foot and ankle deformities. With a traditional AFO it would be extremely difficult to prevent edge pressure not to mention the difficulty of finding footwear that would fit over the traditional AFOs with the bulk of the liner and accommodating insert.

The practitioner's and therapist's goals for this particular patient are for minimal ambulation, to be able to transfer safely and perform basic ADLs.

Other than a Neurowalker, we wonder what other options could be used in a similar case.

We just completed this double upright PTB orthosis fabricated from a cast mold and attached to a patient supplied shoe.
A Patellar Tendon Bearing Orthosis (PTB) is a custom molded plastic brace with metal uprights and ankle joints designed to un-weight the foot and ankle. It decreases the amount of a person’s weight being placed on their bones, joints, and tissue and can also immobilize painful joints of the foot.
The PTB can be utilized using a shoe or a custom molded foot plate. This depends on a patient's condition or unique presentation.

Check out this fun, tie dye Custom Crow, Charcot restraint orthotic walker we recently fabricated for a customer's patient. Custom from cast mold, thick dual layer insert that can be removed for spot adjustments to accommodate changes in deformation that can occur as your patients remain active. Transfer imaging is selected by your patient to match their interests.
