MVMT Place

MVMT Place One on one training rooted in Pilates to help each individual expand their movement competency and g This includes balance, gait, and ranges of motion.

The philosophy of the MVMT Place is centered around an individualized approach. My work is rooted in the understanding of current research about the brain and neuroplasticity. I apply this knowledge of movement neurology to achieve each client’s goal. Regardless of age or physical ability, if you are recovering from injury, have chronic pain, want to get stronger, improve your balance, improve your eyesight, or just feel better, I can help. I start with a thorough movement evaluation to assess exactly what your body needs. Working from a foundation of Pilates, I uniquely tailor each session to target specific movement goals. However, this is not your typical Pilates movement session. It will include cognitive, balance, and vision skills training, specific to you, integrated into each session. It will never be the same session. Keeping training a fun and novel experience is crucial for developing beneficial neuroplasticity. Current research in neuroscience shows how impactful our visual and vestibular (balance/inner ear) systems are on movement, thought, and emotion. There is significant research describing the benefits of cognitive training coupled with physical training. The eyes are a part of our brain and are controlled by muscles that also should be trained, like all other muscles in our body. The vestibular system tells us where we are in space -- are we lying down, standing, turning right or left? It is involved with motion sickness, dizziness, and even poor posture. Our proprioceptive system (joints, muscles, tendons, receptors etc.) also helps us understand our surroundings. At the MVMT Place, I look at how the brain and body work together to receive and integrate information. These functions affect our movement quality, strength, balance, posture, sense of wellbeing, visual clarity, etc. I then use precise exercises and drills to focus on specific goals. Using general movement skills together with a brain-based perspective can help improve and create meaningful strength, flexibility, and coordination. With a widely varied and novel framework, it can provide the possibility for long-term neuroplastic change which may support better physical, mental, cognitive, and emotional function. Do you want to be more coordinated, build strength and overall stability, work on fall prevention, improve at your sport, move without pain? The possibilities are endless. I strongly believe that you are in charge of your health. My role, as a movement coach or specialist, is to provide you the information and techniques to help you reach your goals. As a licensed massage therapist, I truly understands the benefit to you being an active participant in your health. Through this work, you will learn a lot about yourself. You will start to find connections that make sense. You will start to move better and feel better.

“Everything you have ever felt or done in your life was due to brain function. At the most basic level, the intricate firing rates and patterns of your brain both determine who you have been and, more importantly, who you will become. At the most basic level, all human change represents changes in that individual’s nervous system. All that we are is brain-derived.” - Dr. Eric Cobb

Foggy morning view from my Pilates Reformer as I prepare myself and my body for a full day of working with others. So quiet, so private, so peaceful.

Try this stretch if you have discomfort in the front of your hip, knee instability, or you if just want to have stronger quadriceps (thigh) muscles. As always, keep the stretch tension low (3/10). Comment, Share, Like.

Planks are boring and can feel like torture. Doing them on the Reformer is much more dynamic, fun, and a great way to create more Reflexive Stabilization through your trunk.

It's less helpful, and can even be damaging to the integrity of our "core" to always be thinking about "engage the core". It is much more helpful to teach our body to be resilient to the demands we place on our body. This plank series really requires your body to stabilize reflexively (without thinking about it). Ultimately, this is our goal- for our body to do what it needs to do to keep us safe, efficiently, 24/7.

This is a fairly long video, but if you stick with me you will gain some useful information on the importance of nasal breathing and why mouth breathing can be problematic. Skip ahead to see a fun exercise.

Hand-Eye coordination is an important skill to have and develop if it's something you struggle with. Here is a fun drill to practice and improve your Hand-Eye Coordination! Assess a range of motion or strength skill before/after to see if this drill made you perform better. Have fun with it!

I'm working on Hip Stability with the Mobility Stick. It's an invaluable tool that can be used in a variety of ways to increase mobility and strength. For me, this is a very challenging drill- and it has high payoffs! Try it without the stick (or use a long wooden dowel), let me know what you think! Try to keep your hips level and spine in a neutral position the whole time!

Just a spin off of Cat on the Cadillac to work on spinal mobility, this feels so good. A strong and mobile spine can help reduce back discomfort.

Here's the final video in the series on improving grip strength (among other things). It's a great drill for improving triceps strength, reducing elbow discomfort, etc...Hope you find it helpful!

Springing into the weekend on the Pilates Cadillac!

Excuse the editing...still learning, as always.

Here is a fairly long video following up on improving grip strength (skip half way through to get to the meat of the drill- just make sure you keep the tension low).

However, this drill is particularly helpful for racquet sports (such as Pickle Ball!!). If you have had tennis elbow, restriction in your forearm, maybe discomfort at your thumb...try this.

As always, comment/like/share with anyone that might find it helpful.
