The world feels upside down and stressful lately. In the middle of all the chaos, it’s often the small moments that remind me why I do what I do.
A couple weeks ago someone from a holistic group I’m in on FB sent me a private message. She had come across a comment I made on an older post where I told the original poster they were welcome to message me if they had questions. This woman was dealing with significant neck pain and was clearly frustrated and desperate for some relief.
She told me she had tried topical creams, Motrin, 800 mg ibuprofen, and even went to the doctor, but nothing was helping for more than a few hours. At that point she just wanted some direction on what she could try next.
We ended up doing a video call via FB. We live about 1200 miles apart, so hands on work obviously wasn’t an option. I had her move through a few simple range of motion checks so I could get a better idea of what might be going on. From there I showed her a few self massage techniques for the neck and upper shoulder area, along with some gentle stretches for the head and neck.
After the call I sent her a couple short videos so she could visualize the muscles we were talking about and have examples of the techniques we discussed. I also recommended some simple contrast therapy.
She mentioned she was starting to feel a little relief after our call, but I told her to give it some time and stay consistent with the stretches and self care.
Last week she sent me a follow up message saying her neck was back to normal.
I wasn’t paid for the call and she wasn’t a client. She was just someone in pain who needed a little guidance and was willing to try a few suggestions. Sometimes people just need someone to listen, help them understand what might be going on, and give them a few practical tools to help their body do what it’s designed to do.
During a week where my heart was actually quite heavy, receiving this message made me smile. As always, helping people feel and move better really does make my day.
