Millstone Township Uniformed Firefighters

Millstone Township Uniformed Firefighters Welcome to Millstone Township Uniformed Firefighters Local 4388, proud member of the International Association of Firefighters AFL-CIO.

Fire Suppression
The Millstone Township Uniformed Firefighters respond to all types of fires, which include but are not limited to residential structures, commercial buildings, educational facilities, vehicles, brush, and trash. The staffing from 6AM to 6PM of five firefighters allows us to be compliant with the federal regulations pertaining to the “two-in two-out rule”. Since Millstone Township

does not have a municipal water supply we must bring water with us to the fire by means of a tanker. Which is staffed by the fifth firefighter. Firefighters are responsible for many tasks once they arrive which include search and rescue, attacking the fire, and salvage and overhaul to reduce damage to the structure. Firefighters must wear special protective clothing and breathing apparatus to keep them safe while operating in a hazardous environment. This essential equipment weighing upwards of 75 pounds in addition to a charged hose line can reach up to 150 pounds. The equipment can also be very expensive, the diagram below is a rough estimate of how much it costs each firefighter to be protected at a minimum level. Saving lives is a firefighter’s primary concern. In turn they put their lives at risk every time they fight a fire. Extreme stress is put on a firefighter’s body while they fight a fire. Wearing turnout gear and carrying equipment taxes a firefighter during the long periods of exertion. A firefighter’s pulse rate can double during fire ground operations. At larger fires, firefighters must take breaks. They are checked for blood pressure, pulse and temperature before they receive the OK to return to fighting the fire. They must also replenish fluids and take nourishment, as heat exhaustion is a common cause of firefighter injury. Fire Inspection
Many of the career personnel are also Fire Inspectors as well as one Fire Official. According the NJ Statutes registered business, health care facilities, and educational facilities require at least one annual inspection. The purpose of the inspection is to ensure that the owners are compliant with the Uniform Fire Code of New Jersey. Theses statues serve the purpose of both minimizing the chance of fire and ensure occupants can properly escape if needed. We also provide inspections to ensure that homes for sale are complaint with the current statutes that pertain to the resale of a home. The Fire Prevention bureau also offers a free Home Fire Safety Program, which is conducted by a fire inspector and serves the purpose of educating the homeowner about fire safety in their home. To schedule a free home fire safety inspection call 609-259-2560. In addition to any inspection or investigation duties we are responsible to educate the public about fire safety, which can includes education of school age children and the elderly. Rescue Services
As a growing community with increased roadway traffic most vehicle and industrial accidents are minor in nature. However, firefighters are required to stabilize the accident scene, control hazards, and assist police and ambulance personnel in providing quality patient care. Firefighters ensure that the vehicle is stable, so it doesn’t shift when the injured are being removed. We provide first aid, such as supporting head and neck, controlling deadly bleeds before other medical assistance arrives. We also use the “Jaws of Life” and an array of other specialized equipment, to extricate trapped patients. Public Service Calls
Firefighters often perform public service calls. Calls include responding to fire alarms in schools, commercial buildings, or private residences as well as tending to nuisance burning complaints. These calls are part of the day-to-day work of a firefighter. First Responder Services
Many of the career firefighter are trained as EMT-B’s. From 6AM to 6PM we provide first responder services to all calls where there are reports of an unresponsive person or a person in cardiac arrest, which allows us to rapidly intervene during crucial minutes until an EMS transport unit can arrive. Miscellaneous Services
The Millstone Township Uniformed Firefighter participate in many community and charity events. We conduct an annual boot drive to raise money for the MDA, In 2007 we were able to contribute $3,500.00 to the MDA as well adopting the family of the MDA’s 2007 Goodwill Ambassador Child. We sponsor a Millstone Township Little League Team, and we are involved with educating a participating in events with the boy scouts, cub scouts, and girl scouts.

On Monday, March 31, members of the B-Platoon responded to a motor vehicle accident with entrapment on the interstate within Millstone Township. Just days later, on April 3, A-Platoon members responded to a similar incident involving a trapped occupant on the interstate in Upper Freehold Township.

These incidents underscore the importance of the recently implemented automatic aid agreement between Millstone Township and Upper Freehold Township. Under this arrangement, both departments now respond automatically to emergencies along the interstate corridor between mile marker 16.8 and Exit 8.

Due to the divided highway and limited access points, this split-response system ensures that adequate apparatus and personnel from both jurisdictions can quickly access and manage incidents on either side of the roadway—improving patient outcomes and scene safety for all involved.

Supporting Those Who Serve Our Community:

Tonight, Vice President Craig Lewis proudly presented Millstone Troop 116 with a donation and letter of appreciation on behalf of the Millstone Township Uniformed Firefighters, IAFF Local 4388.

After their recent pancake breakfast fundraiser was impacted by a natural gas emergency, our union members wanted to show their support for the incredible work these Scouts do for our community.

Troop 116 continues to set a strong example of service, dedication, and leadership—and we’re proud to stand with them.

Thank you, Troop 116 — we’ll be hungry and ready to support at your next breakfast!

The Millstone Township Uniformed Firefighters Association proudly congratulates Probationary Firefighter James "Jimmy" LaBruno, Badge #230, on his appointment to the Millstone Township Fire District. With his hiring, Probationary Firefighter LaBruno becomes the 32nd career firefighter to be appointed by the fire district since the inception of career staffing in Millstone Township in 1999.

The current career staffing model within the fire district includes 14 career firefighters, 4 career fire officers, and the Fire Chief, for a total of 19 career personnel. Daytime staffing (0600–1800) includes a minimum of six firefighters assigned to a suppression unit (3), a BLS transport ambulance (2), and a tanker (1), with the Fire Chief also on duty. Nighttime staffing includes a minimum of five firefighters assigned to a suppression unit (2), a BLS transport unit (2), and a tanker (1). Volunteer members of the Millstone Township Fire Company supplement coverage during nighttime hours.

We are grateful to the Board of Fire Commissioners for their ongoing support and commitment to public safety through the addition of this important position. Their continued investment in staffing directly enhances the level of service provided to our community.

Congratulations once again to Probationary Firefighter LaBruno!

Today, members of IAFF Local 4388 proudly welcomed our newest firefighter, Jimmy LaBruno, Badge #230.

Jimmy’s first day coincided with the start of our in-house probationary firefighter academy. Throughout the day, probationary members focused on essential skills, including SCBA proficiency, air consumption management, portable ladder operations, and large-area search techniques.

With the addition of Probationary Firefighter LaBruno, our department now consists of the Fire Chief, four Captains, and 14 career firefighters.

Our brothers and sisters in Asbury Park continue to do more with less—a reality all too common in the Fire Service. This incident is a stark reminder that NFPA 1710 exists for a reason—staffing saves lives. IAFF Local 4388 stands in full support of IAFF Local 384 and their mission to protect Asbury Park.

Great job Nick and Kayla.

On May 22, 2024 we responded to a serious accident involving a traumatic amputation. A few weeks ago Chris asked if he could meet the EMT’s who cared for him that night. Tonight we were able to make that happen. It was a pleasure getting to sit down with him and hear about how well his recovery is going. His positivity is truly inspirational.

International Women’s Day – Honoring Our Own

Today, on International Women’s Day, we recognize the hard work and dedication of Firefighter Danielle Curiale and Retired Firefighter Stephanie Carbin. Danielle continues to serve Millstone Township with professionalism and commitment, while Stephanie’s years of service helped shape the department we have today.

The fire service demands skill, grit, and dedication—qualities they’ve both demonstrated throughout their careers. We’re proud to have them as part of our department’s history and future.

Over the past week, our members took time to visit the Millstone Township Primary School for the annual Read Across America event. We always enjoy the opportunity to engage with the students, share the joy of reading, and give them a glimpse into what it’s like to be a firefighter.

Building connections with our community, especially the younger generation, is something we take great pride in. Thank you to the school for having us—we look forward to next year!
