How to become a TEDx Speaker?
Since doing 2 TEDx talks in 2024, I have had people asking me about the process of doing a TEDx talk. It all starts with having—a unique idea. TEDx's motto is 'Ideas worth sharing'. The idea is new in the sense that it is your unique perspective about an idea.
TEDx has rules. and guidelines available on their website. It. is not a workshop or motivational talk. It is sharing your life journey and your learnings focused around your idea. 18 minutes. is the maximum time for the talk. Though most organizers of TEDx events limit it to anywhere from 6 minutes to 15 minutes. Many events are around a theme and your idea should align with the theme.
Look online for TEDx events in areas that you can travel to. It is a non-profit organization, so you fund your travel, stay, etc. If the event is open for new speakers, there will be an application form to be filled. Many organizers require a 1-minute to 3-minute video of you presenting your idea. About 6% of the people who apply get on the TEDx platform. If your idea/application is selected, you go through several rounds of interviews. You pass these interviews and get to be on the TEDx stage, the prestigious red round carpet.
Even though there is an audience during your talk, the emphasis is on getting on the TEDx YouTube Channel to be in front of a global audience. TEDx YouTube channel has about 44 million subscribers.
There are times when your talk might not be published due to violations of the TEDx rules. This is tough news for these speakers as a lot of effort is put into preparing the talk and practicing it before the event.
