🏀🤼 Winter Sports Season Is Here!
As students transition into basketball and wrestling, it’s the perfect time to focus on keeping their bodies moving well, performing strong, and staying injury-free.

At Premier Physical Therapy, we see firsthand how the change in sports demands can place new stress on the body. Here are a few key tips to help athletes move their best this season:

🔥 Warm Up with Purpose
Dynamic warm-ups—like leg swings, lunges, and light cardio—prepare joints and muscles for explosive movement.

💪 Build a Strong Foundation
Winter sports place high demands on the core, hips, and shoulders. Strengthening these areas improves balance, power, and control.

🧊 Don’t Skip Mobility
Tight hips, ankles, and thoracic spine can limit performance and increase injury risk. Daily mobility work keeps movement smooth and efficient.

📆 Recover Intentionally
Stretching, proper hydration, and rest days help athletes stay consistent throughout the season.

⭐Stretch of the Week: Thoracic Spine Open Book Stretch

If you’re dealing with stiffness in your upper back or shoulders—especially from long hours at a desk, driving, or training—this week’s featured stretch is for you. The Open Book Stretch is a gentle, effective way to improve thoracic mobility and reduce tension through the neck and back.

🧘‍♂️ How to Perform the Open Book Stretch:

1. Lie on your side with your knees bent and arms extended straight in front of you.

2. Slowly open your top arm, rotating your upper body as you reach it toward the opposite side.

3. Let your gaze follow your moving hand to encourage full spinal rotation.

4. Hold for 3–5 seconds, then return to the start.

5. Repeat 8–10 times on each side.

✨ Your mid-back acts as a major hub for movement, stability, and breathing which makes thoracic mobility extremely important! When it's stiff, the body has to borrow motion from the other areas--often leading to pain or compensation patterns.
