Barbara Leavens Joachim

Barbara “Barb” Anderson Leavens Joachim, 92, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2025, at Elizabethtown Community Hospital in Elizabethtown, NY, following a brief illness.

Barbara was born on July 26, 1933, in Griffin, Quebec, to James Anderson and Marjorie Bronson. She attended a convent school in Stanstead, Quebec, where she became fluent in French, and graduated from Derby Academy in 1952. After graduation, she worked as a clerk at Butterfield Ltd., where she met William Leavens. They married in 1953 and raised four children: Gary, Jeffrey, Cindy, and Jody. Together, they purchased and remodeled a historic 1900’s schoolhouse on Nelson Hill in Derby, VT, where they made many family memories.

Barbara began working for the UVM Extension Service in Newport, VT, where she was actively involved with 4-H, helping organize projects such as car washes and exchange trips with 4-H'ers in Indiana and Nova Scotia.

In 1977, she moved to Milton, VT, and began a long career as a case manager with the Champlain Valley Agency on Aging (now AgeWell) and the Milton Senior Center, where she served the community for over 30 years with dedication and compassion.

Barbara married David Joachim in 1984. Together, they lived in Milton and Fairfax for many years before moving to Essex Junction. They shared many joyful memories on cross-country road trips to visit family and friends.

A devoted grandmother, Barbara took great pride in her grandchildren, attending musical performances, sports, and activities, always eager to support their accomplishments. She enjoyed tending to her many flower gardens, swimming in the summers, baking for local fundraisers, and shopping for antique collectibles at area garage sales.

Barbara and David were actively involved in the United Church of Milton, where they served on the church’s hospitality team during Sunday coffee hours and attended Bible studies together.

After moving to Essex Junction, Barbara and David made many new friends in their apartment community. Weekly highlights included playing cards, offering neighbors rides, and joining in on Bingo games. She also loved reading and taking long drives through the countryside.

She is survived by her son Gary (Margaret) Leavens of Derby, VT; daughter Cindy (Michael) Dickerson of Milton, VT; daughter-in-law Kathy Leavens of Milroy, IN; and daughter-by-marriage Debbie (Todd) Sheridan of Colchester, VT. She was predeceased by her husband David, son Jeffrey Leavens of Milroy, IN, and daughter Jody Leavens of Plattsburgh, NY. Barbara is also survived by 14 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Barbara was especially grateful for the compassionate in-home caregivers who helped her maintain her independence until the summer of 2025, when she transitioned to more intensive support.

A graveside burial service will be held at the Milton Village Cemetery (date to be determined), with Rev. Jeff Cornwell officiating.

Kevin John Poirier

Kevin John Poirier, a devoted firefighter, cherished family man, and friend to everyone who knew him, passed away on August 25, 2025, at the age of 64, after a short but valiant battle with pancreatic cancer. Born on December 15, 1960, in Burlington, Vermont, Kevin's life was a tapestry woven with service, laughter, and deep bonds of love.

Kevin's remarkable journey in the fire service began as an auxiliary member of the Burlington Fire Department. In 1997, he proudly became a part of the Milton Fire Department, joining alongside his nephew. Over the years, he responded to countless calls for assistance, dedicating himself tirelessly to the protection and safety of his community. His hard work and commitment did not go unnoticed, and he quickly rose through the ranks, becoming an Engineer responsible for apparatus oversight and training fellow members on its operations. It brought him immense joy to share his extensive knowledge with others.

As he advanced to the position of fire lieutenant, Kevin's leadership qualities shone brightly. He was well-known for prioritizing the safety of his team, remaining calm and composed in high-pressure situations, earning him the admiration and trust of those who worked alongside him. Beyond the fireground, Kevin was a mentor to younger members of the fire service, always ready to provide guidance, support, and encouragement. His passion for nurturing future generations of firefighters was a hallmark of his character.

One of Kevin's greatest joys was participating in the annual Vermont State firefighter games. To him, these events transcended competition; they united the firefighting community and fostered bonds among families. He cherished the opportunity to connect with younger members and instill in them the same love for service that motivated him throughout his career. Kevin was not only known as a firefighter, although that was his main “identity” he was employed for over 35 years, D. Richards Automotive in Colchester. He was the general manager there for many years.

In addition to his extraordinary professional achievements, Kevin will be remembered for the loving family he built. He is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Kimberly Poirier, who stood by his side through every moment. Together, they raised two wonderful children, Kaitlyn Poirier and Cameron Poirier, who brought him immense pride. Cameron's fiancée, Cassie Gordon, added to the family’s joy, and Kevin's heart swelled with love for his grandchildren, Carter, Alexis, and Chase Poirier.

Kevin's legacy also includes his special nephew, Chief Chris Poirier and his family, along with his siblings, Karl, Keith, and Kenneth Poirier, and his sisters-in-law, Robin Bagdon and Tanya Allard. He had many nieces and nephews who will carry forward the stories and laughter he shared with them.

Kevin was known for his infectious personality and sense of humor. Christmas was his favorite holiday, a time when he would dress as Santa Claus to deliver Christmas pajamas, a heartwarming tradition he embraced after the passing of his father-in-law. He found joy in simple pleasures: working on cars, hunting for the elusive white-tailed deer with his hunting buddy Craig, spending cherished moments at camp with family and friends, and enjoying days gone by fishing.

Though Kevin has departed from this world, his spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He will be remembered with fondness, respect, and love, as a remarkable man whose vast contributions to his community and family will never fade.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday September 21, 2025 1-4pm at the Milton Eagles Club, 42 Centre Drive, Milton.

Margaret (Peg) Ann Crowley

Margaret (Peg) Ann Crowley, a radiant spirit and beloved soul, left this world on August 22, 2025 following an automobile accident, in Adams, MA, at the age of 83. Born on December 28, 1941, in Shelburne, VT.

In her early career, Margaret and her late husband, Arnold Dashno, shared their lives and dreams as they owned and operated Guay's Market, a cherished grocery store that became a community staple. As time passed, Margaret's passion for helping others evolved, leading her to become a training and employment consultant for those seeking a second career. Her unwavering devotion to the well-being of others did not stop there; after concluding her program, she found joy in mentoring, teaching computer classes, and tirelessly working to support the homeless shelter “Tim’s Place”, where her soothing counsel made a lasting impact.

Margaret was not just a beacon of hope for many; she was the heart of her family. Those who gathered around her festive table remember her famous beef stew, a dish that brought warmth and joy to holiday celebrations. Her love for cooking was just a reflection of the love that she shared—she was always the go-to person, ready with a kind word, a warm meal, and an open heart. Margaret loved driving and going on little excursions and picnics with her close friends which most have predeceased her. Margaret also loved her many family and friend gatherings with meals and endless evening card games as she loved to bring people together. She was so fortunate to have so much love in her life from past to present extended family and friends.

Those closest to her can vividly recall her feisty spirit, her zest for life, and her infectious laughter. She was outgoing, happy, and full of life, embodying the very essence of a caring soul. Margaret had the patience of a saint, dedicating her time and effort to uplift those in need. Fearlessly expressive, she was never shy to say “I love you” to those she cherished, reminding them of the strength of her affection.

In her leisure, Margaret delighted in roller skating, embraced the rhythmic joy of line dancing, and found solace in painting. Her adventurous nature found her exploring on shopping trips with her friends, and reveling in the company of animals, especially her cats, Paisley and her late companion, Precious.

Margaret leaves behind her devoted son, Peter Dashno, and his partner Shawn Collins, who will carry her legacy of love, strength, and service in their hearts. She also leaves a large extended family, and group of friends, whom she cared for tremendously. Though she has departed from our physical world, her spirit will continue to inspire and guide those who knew her. She was predeceased by second by her second husband William Crowley.

As we reflect on Margaret's life, we celebrate a woman who not only lived, but who taught us the immeasurable value of kindness, love, and the beauty of human connection. She will be greatly missed, but her light will remain within us all.

Burial will take place in St. Luke’s Cemetery in Fairfax, VT on September 10th, 2025 at 11:00AM followed by a gathering in St. Albans.
