Summer is knocking at the door and along with Summer comes A LOT of excitement, busy schedules, and new experiences. That can be a great thing, but can also cause sensory overload for us adults and our children too!
Everyone can experience sensory overload, but those with sensory processing differences may experience it more often, or after seemingly less input than others. When someone is experiencing sensory overload, it can present in several different ways;
- Fight, Flight, or Freeze response
- Difficulty slowing down
- Big emotional responses
So what can we do to help our kids when they experience this?
1. Notice that it is happening
2. Figure out what the specific triggers
3. Find regulating strategies to help calm the nervous system
(See the final picture for some general ideas that can be regulating.)
4. Give us a call or send us a message if you need some specific guidance on how to best support your child's sensory system this summer!
