Long ago in India, there was a student who felt sad because of old habits and fears. He went to the wise Buddha for advice. One evening, as the sun was setting, the student shared his worries.
"Master," the student said, "I try hard to find the truth, but my old habits stop me. What should I do?"
The Buddha smiled and asked the student to sit down. "Imagine you are carrying a heavy bag of rocks," the Buddha said. "To move forward, you need to put the bag down."
"But how do I stop these habits?" the student asked.
The Buddha pointed to a lotus flower in the pond and said, "Just like the lotus grows out of the mud to bloom above the water, you too must rise above your old habits. Watch them without getting upset and let them go."
As the student thought about the Buddha's words, he realized he had to change himself. He understood that no one else could do it for him. He had to unlearn the bad habits and take charge of his own growth.
