We have a problem. With over 200 doula training organizations providing education of varying lengths and quality, (some more than 200 hours of quality, in-person instruction and some as little as 5 hours of recorded videos), we are seeing doulas practice with varying skillsets and knowledge. Some of these training programs promise their aspiring doulas they will be ‘certified’ at the end of their training program, sometimes for a lifetime. Consequentially, these doulas have varying practice abilities and have no incentive or understanding that further, future education is critical for developing their skillset and knowledge base. As we begin 2026, we are grounding this year’s work in the values that continue to shape and sustain Black maternal health advocacy, justice, joy, and collective care.

The 2026 Black Maternal Health Week ( ) will take place April 11–17, 2026, creating space for community connection, healing, and action in support of Black Mamas, birthing people, families, and communities.

We have exciting updates coming soon about this year’s week, and we look forward to sharing what’s ahead.

Wisconsin is just one of two states in the nation that doesn't have expanded Medicaid coverage for new moms. We have to change that.

We should extend postpartum coverage from just a lousy 60 days to a full 12 months. It’s what best for our kids—and moms and families, too.
