There are many teachings about the Four Directions—often called the Four Winds. With so many stories shared across tribes, books, and online spaces, it can be difficult to know what is accurate.

What is the Medicine Wheel? Where did it come from? How do these teachings guide our daily lives?

Join us at our next Family Culture Night on Thursday, March 19 AT Southeastern Oneida Tribal Services as we deepen our understanding and explore how these teachings help us build stronger relationships—with ourselves, each other, and the world around us.

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month! Most colorectal cancer starts as non-cancerous growths or polyps, which can be detected with regular screenings and removed with a colonoscopy. Screening is highly recommended for Native men and women ages 45-75. Talk to your doctor about when screening is right for you!

On Thursday, March 19, wear blue and join our Health Promotion Disease Prevention team for Blue Beads Day! There will be healthy food tastings, trivia & prizes, and information about colorectal cancer screenings.

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Our Seed Starting Gathering is coming up Tuesday, March 10, and we’d love to see you there as we get ready for the upcoming garden season. Join us in the Community Room on the 2nd floor of GLIIHC to learn when and how to start plants from seed.

You can help plant seeds that will later be transferred to the Native Wellness Garden, or bring your own seeds to get started. We also encourage seed swapping, so feel free to bring extras to share with others.

Let’s come together to learn, share, and get excited for another season of growing.

Thank you to Natural Foods Co-op for their generous seed donation to help us kick off this gardening season!

Our Story

The Gerald L. Ignace Indian Health Center (GLIIHC) grew out of an awareness in the 1970s of the poor health of Milwaukee’s Native American community. Since its inception, GLIIHC has tripled in size and besides the medical clinic, houses a pharmacy, dental clinic, behavioral health center and a fitness center that is used by our physical therapist.

We provide comprehensive and culturally sensitive health care for the whole family. Tradition reminds us that in order to heal, every part of a human being must be addressed: The mind, body, spirit, and emotions. Our team strives to improve the essential health, peace and well-being of those that reside in the metropolitan Milwaukee area.

Your treatment encompasses the whole family, including the community. Located in the heart of Milwaukee’s near South Side, at 930 W. Historic Mitchell St., your urban Indian health center’s medical, wellness, cultural, spiritual and social services are available for people of all tribes, races, and ethnicities.
