Over the past few years, participants in GLIIHC’s Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) have come together to build healthier habits, support one another, and take meaningful steps toward preventing or delaying type 2 diabetes. This video captures moments of growth, connection, and commitment from our recent cohorts.

If you or a loved one are interested in improving your health, we invite you to attend our OPEN HOUSE: Diabetic Prevention Program House, a chance to learn what the program is all about, meet the team, ask questions, and see if DPP is right for you.

The Diabetes Prevention Program is a year-long, supportive program focused on healthy eating, physical activity, and lasting lifestyle changes — all rooted in community.

To register for the DPP Open House on January 8, or to sign up for the next cohort beginnging on January 22, conact:

Join us for the launch of our Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Program Launch (SANE), this Thursday, December 18. We welcome community members to meet our team, see the spaces, and learn how we care for survivors who have experienced violence in a safe, gentle environment.

At this open house, you can:
• Take a guided walk-through of our soft space in the Medical Department and Behavioral Health Department
• Learn what our SANE program is, what a visit can look like, and the services our program will provide
• Explore educational materials, community resources, and ways to support loved ones

We are honored to share that Gerald L. Ignace Indian Health Center was selected as one of 30 local nonprofits to receive funding from Potawatomi Hotel & Casino’s Heart of Canal Street Charity, an initiative dedicated to supporting organizations that help children in our community.

Through this program, $722,380 was awarded to children’s charities across Milwaukee and Southeastern Wisconsin, with each organization receiving $24,079 to support their important work.

We are incredibly grateful for this investment in our community and the opportunity to continue providing care, support, and culturally grounded services to Native children and families.

THANK YOU to Potawatomi Casino Hotel for strengthening local nonprofits and helping our children thrive.

Introducing GLIIHC’s S.A.N.E. Program! We are honored to expand our services with the launch of GLIIHC’s Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (S.A.N.E.) Program, created to support survivors of violence with compassionate, trauma-informed care.

A Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner is a specially trained nurse who provides medical care for individuals experiencing acute or long-term health effects related to sexual assault, strangulation, or other injuries caused during violence. SANEs are trained to gently assess injuries, offer appropriate treatment, and support survivors through the next steps of healing.

To help our community learn more, we invite you to attend our S.A.N.E. Program Launch, where you can:
• Take a guided walk-through of our soft, private spaces in both Medical and Behavioral Health
• Learn what a SANE visit looks like and the services our program will provide
• Explore educational materials, resources, and ways to support loved ones
• Connect with our staff, ask questions, and enjoy light refreshments

Because these conversations can be sensitive, we encourage you to consider what you feel comfortable sharing with your children before attending.

Come see how GLIIHC is expanding support for survivors and strengthening pathways to safety, dignity, and healing in our community.

Our Story

The Gerald L. Ignace Indian Health Center (GLIIHC) grew out of an awareness in the 1970s of the poor health of Milwaukee’s Native American community. Since its inception, GLIIHC has tripled in size and besides the medical clinic, houses a pharmacy, dental clinic, behavioral health center and a fitness center that is used by our physical therapist.

We provide comprehensive and culturally sensitive health care for the whole family. Tradition reminds us that in order to heal, every part of a human being must be addressed: The mind, body, spirit, and emotions. Our team strives to improve the essential health, peace and well-being of those that reside in the metropolitan Milwaukee area.

Your treatment encompasses the whole family, including the community. Located in the heart of Milwaukee’s near South Side, at 930 W. Historic Mitchell St., your urban Indian health center’s medical, wellness, cultural, spiritual and social services are available for people of all tribes, races, and ethnicities.
