2026 marks 100 years since Dr. Carter G. Woodson established Negro History Week, the precursor to Black History Month. This year’s theme examines how Black history and life commemorations have evolved and transformed the perception of Black people in the modern world. It recognizes that 2026 coincides with challenges emphasizing the continuous need to defend and build upon Black history and achievements. It also ties into the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, linking Black history to fundamental American rights. Other interpretations connect the centennial to themes of heritage, hope, and future horizons. This month, GLIIHC will be honoring and sharing stories, information about Black history, and ways to support beyond February.

Our third Jingle Dress Dancing class is happening this Wednesday, February 4, and we’re grateful to continue moving, learning, and healing together. Each session builds on the steps, teachings, and meaning of the Jingle Dress Dance — honoring tradition while strengthening body, mind, and spirit.

Whether you’ve been dancing with us since the beginning or are joining for the first time, you’re welcome in the circle. Wear your moccasins if you have them, and come ready to move and connect.

Please remember that participants under 18 should be accompanied by an adult.

We look forward to dancing together again this week.

*Don't forget! If you can't attend in person, this class will be offered as a Facebook Live video. Come to our FB page at 4pm and wait for the video to begin. Once the class is complete, the video will remain on our Facebook feed for one month.

Our next Family Culture Night is on TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 3! Mark Denning of the Oneida Nation, Dr. Rainey Gaywish of the Fish River Cree Nation, and Guy Reiter of the Menominee Nation will lead a lesson and discussion about Bear Bundles. This experience welcomes people of all faiths, background, and ways of understanding. Together, we will explore stories, teaching, and perspectives that invite reflection on health, balance, and our shared responsibility to one another and the land we call Milwaukee.

As January comes to an end, we want to take a moment to talk about cervical cancer. January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about prevention, early detection, and care.

Native American women experience higher rates of cervical cancer and are more likely to die from the disease than non-Hispanic white women. These disparities are often linked to barriers in access to screening, follow-up care, and preventive services, which makes awareness and early detection especially important in our communities.

Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers. Regular screenings, like Pap tests and HPV testing, can find changes early, often before cancer develops. The HPV vaccine also plays a critical role in prevention.

Taking care of your health is an act of strength. If you have questions about screenings, vaccines, or scheduling an appointment, our care teams are here to support you.

It’s not too late to join our Diabetes Prevention Program! Our Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) kicked off on January 22, and after two great classes, there’s already strong momentum and support building within the group. The good news? You can still sign up and join us for our third class on Thursday, February 5.

DPP helps participants prevent or delay type 2 diabetes through realistic lifestyle changes — focusing on healthy eating, physical activity, stress management, and community support led by trained coaches.

If you’ve been thinking about making a change in 2026, now is a great time to jump in and grow alongside others who are on the same journey.

We’re honored that Gerald L. Ignace Indian Health Center is a recipient of the TMJ4 News & WaterStone Bank Community Baby Shower ❤️

The Community Baby Shower is an annual donation drive that supports local organizations serving families with infants and young children. Donations help provide essential items like diapers, wipes, clothing, and other baby supplies to families who need them most across Milwaukee and Southeastern Wisconsin.

Community members can support the drive by donating new baby items or making a financial contribution through participating WaterStone Bank locations and partner drop-off sites. Every donation helps ensure families have what they need to give their little ones a healthy start.

We are deeply grateful to WTMJ4, WaterStone Bank, and everyone who donates for thinking of our Native families and helping us continue to support parents, babies, and caregivers in our community.

To learn how and where to donate, visit:

During the month of January, visit any WaterStone Bank and drop off baby basics like diapers, formula, wipes, new clothes and toys.

Our Story

The Gerald L. Ignace Indian Health Center (GLIIHC) grew out of an awareness in the 1970s of the poor health of Milwaukee’s Native American community. Since its inception, GLIIHC has tripled in size and besides the medical clinic, houses a pharmacy, dental clinic, behavioral health center and a fitness center that is used by our physical therapist.

We provide comprehensive and culturally sensitive health care for the whole family. Tradition reminds us that in order to heal, every part of a human being must be addressed: The mind, body, spirit, and emotions. Our team strives to improve the essential health, peace and well-being of those that reside in the metropolitan Milwaukee area.

Your treatment encompasses the whole family, including the community. Located in the heart of Milwaukee’s near South Side, at 930 W. Historic Mitchell St., your urban Indian health center’s medical, wellness, cultural, spiritual and social services are available for people of all tribes, races, and ethnicities.
