Distorted thinking:

1 Mind reading thoughts-you think you know what someone ekse is thinking

2 Fortune teller thoughts-you think you know what is going to happen

3 It's my fault thoughts-you think you can cause bad things to happen

4 Magnifying glass thoughts-you think your problem is bigger than it really is

5 Always or never thoughts-thinking something always happens or never happens

How to reframe distorted thoughts:

1 Be the watcher-simply be conscious of yourself as a detached witness to your thoughts

2 Name that thought-acknowledging that they are nothing more than thoughts, not your reality

3 Just say no-when you catch yourself in mental looping or worry, say "STOP!" out loud, until the thoughts go away. DO THIS EVERY TIME YOU START HAVING NEGATIVE THOUGHTS (PRACTICE)

4 Try the rubber band trick-if you are stuck in negative thinking, gently pop the rubber band on your wrist

5 Know your triggers-pay attention to common worries and anxieties you think about

6 Distract yourself-do something immersive that will occupy your mind so there's no room for the negative thoughts

-Feelings are NOT facts
-Don't believe everything you think

This is NOT in my control-other people's words, other people's mistakes, other people's ideas, other people's actions, other people's beliefs, the consequences of other people's actions

This IS in my control-my words, my behavior, my actions, my efforts, my mistakes, my ideas, the consequences of my actions

How to Stop Overthinking

1 Plan a specific time to think about certain things
2 Put a time limit on it; don’t allow overthinking to continue endlessly
3 Distract yourself with something immersive
4 Firmly tell yourself to stop thinking about it
5 Write it down
6 Limit your choices; fewer choices make deciding easier
7 Let go of perfection; strive for good enough
8 Embrace mistakes; mistakes and disagreements are part of the growth process
9 Stay present, focused, and don’t spend time in what-if land

BPD and Identity

To reclaim our individual identities and to build a strong foundation upon which our personhood and identity are defined, we must be able to answer the following questions consistently:

1 What do I value? What are my values?

2 Am I telling and living my truth?

3 If I am lying or misrepresenting the truth, why am I doing this?

4 What do I like about myself? What don't I like about myself? Why?

5 Have I cleared my head and heart of any and all past experiences?

6 How do I feel about myself? Do I like myself? Can I accept myself?

7 Have I felt and dealt with my pain? Have I grieved for my losses and disappointments? Am I willing to work through them and let them go?

8 How do I want to represent myself? How do I want others to see and experience me?

9 Am I willing to face my pain (from the past)?

10 Why do I stay invested in hurting myself? Do I not hurt enough?

11 Do I feel that I am worthy of being respected, loved, and cared for or about?

12 Am I ready to take personal responsibility? Am I ready to be held accountable for my actions and my words? Am I ready to live my truth now and let go of the past?

13 Am I ready to acknowledge that whether or not I get better will be largely up to me?

14 Am I ready to lay down the maladaptive defenses that only serve to keep me separated from myself? ("Separating Myself from Myself")? Am I ready to learn new and healthier ways to cope and to relate to myself and others?

15 Do I want to get and be well?
