Reposted from ✨ This summer when I went through ear my 15th ear reconstructive surgery, the stigma and shame I experienced as a child came flooding back to me. It's been a long process of healing but here we are 6 months later and I’ve made it to the space of acceptance. Letting go of what my ear was and accepting what it has now become.

Finalizing this book helped me to heal and brought so much joy into my heart❤️

To commemorate this moment I'm releasing my first children's book" Different Like Me "!

Microtia is a condition that is present at birth in which the external ear is underdeveloped. It may affect one or both ears, but it most commonly occurs on the right side. Microtia is sometimes related to craniofacial syndromes such as Treacher Collins or Goldenhar, and it is often accompanied by atresia, or absence of the ear canal. When the ear canal is absent, there is usually conductive hearing loss on the affected side(s).

Some people with microtia may choose to seek surgery or a prosthesis to improve facial symmetry and provide anatomical support for eyeglasses and hearing devices, while others choose not to pursue any intervention.

Treatment options for microtia include going natural (no treatment), surgical reconstruction, and prosthetic restoration. We suggest that you discuss these options with an otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat specialist), and/or a facial plastic reconstructive surgeon. You should also consult an otolaryngologist or audiologist (hearing specialist) to evaluate the hearing loss associated with atresia. As clinical anaplastologists we can answer your questions about prosthetic restoration of the ear.

A silicone prosthetic ear is a reconstructive option for patients born with microtia and other birth differences such as Treacher Collins or Goldenhar syndrome; as well as those who have suffered traumatic injury or undergone cancer resection surgery (auriculectomy). Our certified anaplastologists create a remarkably life-like ear prosthesis matching the shape, skin tones, and textural detail of your healthy ear. Our patients appreciate the practically invisible transition between their skin and their realistic prosthetic ear.

Our certified anaplastologists are masters-degreed medical artists who custom-make your silicone ear prosthesis in our own laboratory ensuring high quality and individual design. No need to worry--we are gentle and nothing we do is painful. We treat our patients like family and make sure your time with us is stress free.

We work closely with patients and their families to determine a prosthetic solution that will be comfortable, life-like, and functional. We custom-make your silicone toe prosthesis to protect sensitive tissue, improve function and create a normal appearance. We mimic the texture, color and translucency of your skin and nails to create prosthetic toes that closely match your existing toes.
Prosthetic toes may be needed due to:

Congenital or birth difference; such as brachymetatarsia (abnormally short toe), Amniotic band syndrome, or symbrachydactyly (missing toes at birth)

Surgery – toe amputation due to cancer or tumor removal

Disease such as diabetes or scleroderma resulting in toe amputation

Traumatic injury – work-related injuries, burns, or other traumas

Loss of even a single toe, especially a great toe amputation, impacts gait and balance and may lead to foot, knee, and hip pain. Custom toe prosthetics may help maintain the normal position of remaining toes and improve your gait and comfort by restoring normal toe length.

Custom Ni**le Prostheses

Our custom ni**le prostheses are created for those who have had lumpectomies or mastectomies, sometimes followed by surgical breast reconstruction, as treatment for breast cancer. We match the ni**le size and projection, ar**la diameter, texture and color of your ni**le with attention to every detail. Our soft silicone adheres naturally to the breast when worn within a bra. Adhesive may be used for added confidence and is recommended when the prosthetic ni**le is worn without a bra.

What Is the Process for Making a Ni**le Prosthesis?

First and foremost, no need to worry–we are gentle, respectful, and nothing we do is painful. We custom-make each prosthesis in our own laboratory ensuring high quality and individual design. The process typically requires 3 appointments which involve these steps:

• We make molds of the breast or chest wall.

• We carefully sculpt the shape of the prosthesis in wax as we establish a natural contour.

• When the sculpture is complete, we fabricate a durable mold which allows us to reproduce the soft highly detailed prosthetic ni**le.

• We create color formulae to match your complexion.

• We meticulously paint every skin detail using your color formulae in your mold.

• We check the ni**le prosthesis for precise fit, and delicately paint color details onto the surface.

• We demonstrate wear and care instructions so that you can use your ni**le prosthetic with confidence.

WEBINAR • Orbital & Upper Facial Prostheses: Every Detail Matters
Instructor: Julie Jordan Brown, M**S, CCA (USA)

Each orbital case presents particular challenges. This presentation will focus on the details that create a life-like orbital prosthesis, including sculpting the eyelids in preparation for eyelash insertion, mold-making tips, eyelash and eyebrow simulation, and a technique to simulate movement when the patient smiles. Strategies for locating the ocular symmetrically and reducing face-to-face sculpting time will also be discussed.
