Congresswoman Moore is lifting up two important matters here. 1. The postpartum period is a time when gestating parents are uniquely vulnerable to mental illness. 2. Copays are barriers to care. By design. They are penalties charged every time a patient wants to access the care they’re already paying for. They’re meant to discourage people from seeing their doctors, and they incentivize postponing care until conditions worsen and become harder to treat.
Postpartum depression and related mental health conditions can be matters of life and death. How about we not incentivize postponing care?
