On February 18, 2026 (Chinese Lunisolar New Year, third day of the first month), around noon in sunny, breezy Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the Midwest of U.S.. The Association of Integrative and Complementary Medicine student group at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), together with the Global Health Organization (likely another MCW student group), hosted a luncheon event in the Bolger Auditorium.
They invited Dr. Guanyuan Jin of Ace Acupuncture and 3 other local doctors or professors who practice integrative/complementary medicine to join a panel discussion. The topics covered were:
*How did you first get interested in and involved with integrative and complementary medicine?
*What are the most common misunderstandings or myths about integrative and complementary medicine?
*How do you balance the use of alternative/holistic approaches with standard Western medical treatments?
*How does your work directly help improve healthcare for the local diverse and global communities?
*What kinds of problems or concerns usually bring patients to seek your care?
Thanks to the invitation, Dr. Jin attended and shared his own views. He pointed out at least two major misconceptions in the Western medical community about Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM): people often mistake acupuncture's real physiological effects for just a placebo response, and they think compound herbal formulas are unsafe. Dr. Jin also strongly criticized the wrong claim by some non-acupuncturist "dry needling" practitioners that dry needling is not a form of acupuncture. By sharing real-life examples—like using acupuncture to relieve severe pain, and successfully using Chinese herbs to save a critically ill child with Pseudomonas aeruginosa pneumonia at a Minnesota children's hospital — Dr. Jin showed the scientific basis and proven effectiveness of TCM. This really opened the eyes of the mostly medical student audience and gave them fresh insights!
